COLLEGE PARK, Md.- Maryland women's swimming and diving wrapped up the 2007 Atlantic Coast Conference Championships in Chapel Hill, N.C. today with a sixth-place finish (332 points). North Carolina led the meet with 737 points followed by Florida State in second (642.5 points) and Virginia in third (475 points).
Prelims:
To start the last prelim session of the 2007 ACCs, freshman Andrea Lehner (Orchard Park, N.Y.) earned the seventh-place spot in the championship final for the 200-yard backstroke; Lehner swam a season best and NCAA B-cut time of 2:00.30. Qualifying for the 11th-place position in the consolation final for the 200 back was freshman Jackie Davidson (Beverly, Mass.) with a career-best time in the event (2:02.41). Junior Kirsten Jones (Lafayette Hill, Pa.) placed 17th (2:05.12) in the 200 back prelims for a spot in the bonus consolation final.
In the prelim for the 100 freestyle, sophomore Yelena Skalinskaya (Almaty, Kazakhstan) notched a position in the consolation final with an 11th-place finish (51.15). Two Terps qualified for the bonus consolation final, both swimming season bests; junior Maya Finkler (Rishon le-zion, Israel) swam a 51.70 for 19th place and senior Kaleena Laputka (Shamong, N.J.) swam a 51.78 for 20th place. Junior Emily Smoak (Salisbury, Md.) established a career-best time in the prelim for the 100 free (52.36) for 28th place.
Senior Sasha Malanina (Volgograd, Russia) led the Terrapins in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:22.03, good for a 16th-place spot in the consolation final. Qualifying for the bonus consolation final in the event was senior Katarina Csomova (Komarno, Slovakia) with a season-best time of 2:22.74 and a 17th-place finish in prelims.
In the 200 butterfly, Maryland had three swimmers qualify for the championship final. Freshman Patty DeScenza (Naperville, Ill.) swam an NCAA B-cut and season-best time of 2:02.12 for a third-place seed in the 200 fly final. Freshman Jen Vogel (Hingham, Mass.) earned a sixth-place seed (2:02.87) and freshman Nina Rossi (Princeton, N.J.) finished seventh with a season best (2:03.04). Freshman Annie Broome (Knoxville, Tenn.) earned a tenth-place spot in the consolation final for the 200 fly with a time of 2:03.34.
Finals
In the championship final for the 200 back, Lehner finished fourth with a season best and NCAA B-cut time of 1:59.37. Lehner collected 15 points for the Terps in this event. In the consolation heat, Davidson finished 10th with a time of 2:02.91, scoring seven points.
Skalinskaya went on to lead Maryland in the consolation heat of the 100 free with a 12th-place finish (51.18) for five points. In the bonus consolation final, Finkler swam to a 17th-place overall finish and season-best time of 51.43 while Laputka finished in 20th with a time of 52.08.
In the following event, Csomova finished in 16th place for the consolation final in the 200 breast (2:23.48), tallying one point for the Terps.
Vogel led Maryland in the championship final for the 200 fly, swimming a career best and NCAA B-cut time of 2:01.43 for fourth place (15 points). DeScenza followed in sixth place with another NCAA B-cut time of 2:02.39 (13 points) while Rossi finished seventh with a time of 2:04.18 (12 points). Broome collected six points for the Terps with an 11th-place finish in the consolation heat of the 200 fly with a time of 2:03.65.
Maryland closed out the 2007 ACC Championships with a fourth-place finish and NCAA B-cut time in the 400 free relay. The squad of Lehner, Skalinskaya, Laputka and Finkler swam a 3:24.23 while North Carolina led the meet with a 3:19.44 in the relay.
Individual winners in tonight's finals included: Whitney Sprague (North Carolina) in the 1650 free (16:10.02; NCAA A-cut time), Romy Altmann (Florida State) in the 200 back (1:57.08; NCAA A-cut time), Christie Raleigh (Florida State) in the 100 free (49.56; NCAA B-cut time), Jessica Botzum (Virginia Tech) in the 200 breast (2:13.52; NCAA A-cut) and Lindsey Marck (North Carolina) in the 200 fly (1:59.19; NCAA B-cut time).
