No. 32 Terps Fall to No. 14 VCU, 6-1

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The nationally-ranked Maryland women's tennis team lost Sunday to No. 14 Virginia Commonwealth, 6-1, in a non-conference match held at the Tennis Center at College Park. The No. 32 Terps fell to 7-2 on the season, while VCU improved to 11-2.

Playing at the No. 3 position, Maryland freshmen Lisa Miller and Elyse Steiner won their doubles match against Maria Klokotzky and Viktoria Konstantinova, 8-6. But the Terps' Marianne Baker and Eleanor Peters lost to Marianna Yuferova and Olga Borisova, 8-6, at No. 1, while Maggie MacKeever and Brooke Rogers fell to VCU's Tatsiana Uvarova and Vera Petrashevitch, 8-6, at No. 2, allowing the Rams to take the double point.

The Terps' lone point came from Baker with her win over Yuferova (6-3, 6-4) at the No. 2 singles spot. Baker is ranked No. 75 nationally in singles play.

In the No. 1 singles position, Peters dropped her match against Uvarova 6-1, 7-5 and MacKeever lost to Borisova 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 4 singles spot.

Miller was defeated by Konstantinova (6-0, 6-2) in the No. 5 position and Rogers lost to Olena Leonchuk (6-1, 6-1) in the No. 6 position. Steiner dropped a close match to Klokotzky (6-1, 3-6, 1-0 [10-6]) at No. 3

The Terrapins will head to Philadelphia next weekend to face No. 36 Penn at noon Saturday and then to New Jersey to take on Princeton at 11 a.m. Sunday.
