PRINCETON, N.J. - The No. 33-ranked Maryland women's tennis suffered a hard-luck loss Sunday, falling to Princeton, 4-3, in a non-conference match at the Lenz Tennis Center.

The Terrapins dropped to 7-4 on the season, while Princeton won for the fifth-straight time, improving to 5-2.

Maryland got off to a fast start, sweeping all three doubles matches to pick up one point, but Princeton won at No. 1 and 2 singles and went on to take four of the six singles matches, including two which went to three sets.

Maryland's Marianne Baker and Eleanor Peters, the No. 53-ranked doubles duo in the nation, won at the No. 1 position, defeating Ivana King and Melissa Saiontz, 8-4. The Terps clinched the doubles point at No. 2, when Michal Amir and Maggie MacKeever downed Sarah Huah and Darcy Robertson, 8-4.

Terps' freshmen Elyse Steiner and Lisa Miller won at No. 3, defeating Blakely Ashley and Joanna Roth, 8-5.

The Terps were seemingly in control when Amir was the first to close out a singles match. She defeated Robertson 6-4, 6-2 at the No. 3 position.

But the Tigers battled back, winning the next two matches. Roth defeated Brooke Rogers 6-4, 6-2 at No. 6 and the Saiontz, the No. 100-ranked player in the nation, upset Peters 7-6 (7-3), 6-0 at No. 1. Peters is ranked No. 66 nationally in singles.

MacKeever downed Ashley 7-6 (9-7), 6-2 at No. 5 to give the Terps a 3-2 lead, but Princeton captured the final two matches.

At the No. 2 position, Ivana King upset Baker 6-7, 6-4, 7-6 before Huah clinched the match with a 5-7, 6-3, 7-6 (7-1) win over Steiner at No. 4.

Maryland will have a chance to regroup as the Terps are off until Friday, March 9 when they open a four-match homestand against Georgia Tech. The Terps, who are 1-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, face off with the Yellow Jackets at 3 p.m. at the Tennis Center at College Park.
