Terrapins to Face Bulldogs in NCAA Tournament

    Fourth-seeded Maryland takes on No. 5 seed Butler in the second round of the 2007 NCAA Tournament. Tip-off is set for 3:20 p.m. Saturday at the HSBC Arena in Buffalo, N.Y. The game can be heard on the Terrapin Sports Radio Network and will be televised by CBS Sports. The winner of Saturday's game advances to the Midwest Regional Semifinal in St. Louis, Mo., on Friday, March 23.
    • The Terps carry a mark of 25-8 (10-6 ACC) into the contest, while Butler is 28-6 (13-3 Horizon). Maryland is ranked 18th in the Associated Press poll and 22nd in the latest ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll.
    • Saturday's game marks the first meeting between Maryland and Butler. The Terps are 11-5 all-time against opponents from the Horizon League.
    • Maryland is making its 22nd appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The Terrapins are 36-20 all-time in the NCAA Tournament.
    • The Terps are the fourth seed in the Midwest Region. Maryland is now 4-2 all-time in the NCAA Tournament as a No. 4 seed. The Terrapins were the fourth seed in the Denver Regional in 2004. Maryland knocked off 13th-seeded UTEP (86-83) in the first round, before falling to fifth-seeded Syracuse (72-70) in the second round.
    • A victory over Butler would send the Terrapins to the NCAA Sweet 16 for the 14th time in school history. Maryland has advanced to the Sweet 16 in seven of the last 13 years.
    • Maryland's 25 victories is the highest win total for the Terps since they won 32 games en route to the NCAA Championship in 2002. The Terrapins' 25 wins this year is tied for the fourth-highest win total for any Gary Williams team.
    • Head coach Gary Williams has guided the Terps to a record of 23-10 (.697) in 12 appearances in the NCAA Tournament. Williams is 27-13 (.675) in 14 trips to the NCAA Tournament.
    • Maryland tied a school record with 54 rebounds in an NCAA Tournament game against Davidson. The Terps set the mark with 54 boards against Boston College in 1958.
    • The Terrapins are making their 14th consecutive postseason appearance. Maryland appeared in 11 straight NCAA Tournaments from 1994-2004.

    Six Terrapins scored in double figures as Maryland downed Davidson, 82-70, in the first round of the 2007 NCAA Tournament. Trailing by eight points (52-44) early in the second half, the Terps used a 25-11 run to surge ahead, 69-63, with 7:27 to play. Late in the second half with Maryland ahead, 72-68, senior Mike Jones knocked down a three-pointer to give the Terps a seven-point cushion (75-68) with 2:11 to play. The Terrapins made 7-of-8 free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
    • Jones led the Terps with 17 points. D.J. Strawberry and James Gist poured in 12 for the Terps. Ekene Ibekwe and Bambale Osby each scored 11, while Greivis Vasquez tallied 10 for the Terrapins.
    • Forward James Gist scored 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Gist has scored in double figures in 16 of his last 18 games.
    • The Terps tied a school record with 54 rebounds in an NCAA Tournament game. Maryland tallied 54 rebounds against Boston College in 1958.
    • Maryland enjoyed a 46-22 advantage in points scored in the paint.

    The Terrapins swept the regular season series with Duke for the second time in three years. The Terps also captured a victory in the only regular season meeting with North Carolina, marking the first time since 1938-39 that the Terps swept the Blue Devils and Tar Heels.
    • With Thursday's victory over Davidson, combined with two wins over NC State and a victory at Wake Forest, Maryland has swept every opponent from the state of North Carolina this year for the first time since 1932-33.

    Four Terrapins garnered postseason All-ACC honors this season. Senior D.J. Strawberry was named second team All-ACC. He becomes the first Terps to earn second team All-ACC honors since Drew Nicholas in 2003. Strawberry was also placed on the league's All-Defensive Team after earning honorable mention honors last season.
    • Strawberry was named to the 2007 U.S. Basketball Writers Association All-District Team for District III on March 6.
    Ekene Ibekwe was named to the ACC All-Defensive Team. Ibekwe led the league in blocked shots this season. He also earned All-ACC honorable mention honors.
    • Junior James Gist earned honorable mention All-ACC plaudits. Gist has scored in double figures in 16 of his last 18 games this season. He recorded six double-doubles this year and scored in double figures 26 times.
    Greivis Vasquez garnered All-ACC Freshman honorable mention plaudits this year. Vasquez leads the team with 153 assists this year, which is the third-highest single-season assist total among freshmen at Maryland.

    Maryland senior D.J. Strawberry has continued his strong all-around play as a senior. Strawberry is 11th in the ACC with a team-high 15.1 points per game.
    • The senior swingman is third in the conference with 2.1 steals per game and ranks ninth in assist to turnover ratio (1.69).
    • Strawberry's 18-point performance at NC State (Feb. 14) made him the 45th player in school history to reach the 1,000-point plateau. Strawberry now has 1,118 points for his career. His 497 points this year is his highest single-season total.
    • After helping the Terps post wins at Florida State and North Carolina, Strawberry was named the ACC Player of the Week on February 26. It was the second consecutive week he earned the award. He averaged 18.5 points and 4.0 rebounds per game and shot 63 percent (17 of 27) from the field. It was the third time this season he earned the weekly award.

    Four Terrapins are rapidly climbing the school's all-time record book. Seniors D.J. Strawberry, Ekene Ibekwe, and Mike Jones have all made their mark in the Terrapin annals, along with junior James Gist:
    • Strawberry is fifth in school history with 200 career steals.
    • Ibekwe is in fourth place on the school's all-time blocked shots list. The Carson, Calif., native has 228 career rejections at Maryland and has averaged 1.8 blocked shots per game.
    • With 10 rebounds against Miami, Ibekwe moved into 11th place on the school's all-time rebounding list. The senior forward has 772 career rebounds.
    • Ibekwe has attempted 480 career free throws and ranks 12th all- time at Maryland.
    • Senior Mike Jones has distinguished himself as one of the best shooters in the ACC and has rapidly moved up the school's all-time three pointers list. Jones has totaled 198 three-point field goals, which is second on the school's all-time list. Jones has hoisted 489 shots from beyond the arc, which is the third highest total in school history.
    • Gist has totaled 150 blocked shots during his three seasons in College Park. He is eighth on the school's all-time list and has averaged 1.7 blocks per game.

    Maryland has proven to be one of the nation's most proficient 3-point shooting teams since the rule was instituted in 1987.
    • Maryland has made at least one 3-pointer in 285 consecutive games.
    • Maryland has failed to make a 3-pointer just twice in the last 355 games.
    • The last game the Terps failed to make a 3-pointer was Jan 7, 1999 when Maryland went 0-for-7 from 3-point range in a 71-66 win at Virginia.
    • Since Gary Williams took over, Maryland has hit a 3-pointer in 570-of-577 games.
    • Since the rule was instituted in 1987, Maryland has hit at least one three-pointer in 628-of-637 games.
    • Maryland made a school-record 217 treys in 2001-02.
    • The Terps' top 3-point shooting percentage was 46.1% (122-290) in 1987-88.
    • Maryland set new school records for most three-pointers in a game (17) and most three-point attempts (37) earlier this season against Missouri-Kansas City.
