Terrapins Host NC State Saturday on ABC

  • Game Notes

    Maryland concludes Atlantic Coast Conference regular season play Saturday (March 3) when the Terrapins host NC State. Tip-off is set for 3:30 p.m. The game can be heard on the Terrapin Sports Radio Network and will be televised nationally by ABC.
    • The Terps carry a mark of 23-7 (9-6 ACC) into the contest, while NC State is 15-13 (5-10 ACC). The Terrapins enter Wednesday's game on a six-game winning streak while NC State posted a 73-66 victory over Wake Forest in its last outing.
    • Saturday's game against NC State marks the 141st meeting between the two schools. NC State leads the all-time series, 72-68. Maryland scored an 85-70 victory over the Wolfpack February 14.
    • Maryland senior D.J. Strawberry leads the Terps with 15.2 points per game. He is 11th in the Atlantic Coast Conference in scoring. Freshman Brandon Costner leads the Wolfpack with 16.2 points per game. He is 10th in the ACC in scoring and ranks fourth in the league in rebounding (7.6 rpg).
    • Maryland's six-game winning streak in the ACC is its first since the Terrapins finished the 2001-02 season with 12 consecutive league victories.
    • Maryland's victory over Duke (Feb. 28) marked the first time since 1938-39 that the Terrapins have swept North Carolina and Duke in the same season. A victory over NC State on Saturday would give the Terps their first sweep over schools from the state of North Carolina since 1932-33.
    • Saturday's contest marks the final home game for six Maryland seniors (Will Bowers, Parrish Brown, Gini Chukura, Ekene Ibekwe, Mike Jones, D.J. Strawberry). Maryland's 2007 senior class has combined for 81 wins and helped the Terps capture the 2004 ACC Tournament Championship. They have reached their highest single-season win total (23) at Maryland this season.
    • The Terps have recorded their 10th 20-win season under head coach Gary Williams. He has posted 16 20-win seasons for his career. The Terrapins have tallied at least 19 wins in each of the past 11 years and have averaged 22.8 wins the last 12 years.

    Four Terrapins scored in double figures as Maryland defeated Duke, 85-77, in Durham Wednesday night (Feb. 28), giving the Terps a sweep of the season series. With the score tied, 64-64, with 5:39 to play, the Terps went on a 7-0 run over the next 1:47 to surge ahead and take control for good. Senior Mike Jones led all scorers with 25 points on 9-of-15 shooting. Jones knocked down 4-of-5 from three-point range and added six rebounds and four assists in the victory. The Terrapins held Duke to just 41 percent shooting from the floor and forced 12 turnovers. Maryland enjoyed a 46-32 advantage in points in the paint.
    • Freshman Greivis Vasquez missed a triple-double by just one rebound as he tallied 13 points, 12 assists and nine rebounds at Duke. He added one blocked shot and a steal in 37 minutes.
    • Seniors D.J. Strawberry and Ekene Ibekwe each recorded 17 points in the win. Strawberry shot 8-of-15 from the field while Ibekwe added two assists and two blocked shots in 27 minutes against the Blue Devils.

    The Terps have made a renewed commitment to defense in 2006-07. Maryland has forced its opponents into an average of 17.4 turnovers per game this season.
    • The Terps lead the ACC and are ninth in the nation in field goal percentage defense (.391).
    • Maryland's opponents are shooting just 30 percent (175-of-591) from three-point range which leads the league.
    • The Terps are averaging 7.5 steals per game and have recorded 205 blocked shots through 30 games.
    • Maryland is tops in the ACC and fifth in the nation with 6.8 blocked shots per game.

    Maryland senior D.J. Strawberry has continued his strong all-around play as a senior. Strawberry is 11th in the ACC with a team-high 15.2 points per game.
    • The senior swingman is fourth in the conference with 2.07 steals per game and ranks seventh in assist to turnover ratio (1.76). • Strawberry's 18-point performance at NC State (Feb. 14) made him the 45th player in school history to reach the 1,000-point plateau. Strawberry now has 1,077 points for his career. His 456 points this year is his highest single-season total.
    • After helping the Terps post wins at Florida State and North Carolina, Strawberry was named the ACC Player of the Week on February 26. It was the second consecutive week he earned the award. He averaged 18.5 points and 4.0 rebounds per game last week and shot 63 percent (17 of 27) from the field. It was the third time this season he earned the weekly award.

    Maryland has displayed a balanced offensive attack this season. The Terps boast the second-highest scoring average in the league (80.1 ppg), and have five players averaging double figures.
    D.J. Strawberry leads the team with 15.2 points per game. Mike Jones is averaging 13.1 points per game while James Gist is averaging 12.8 points per contest. Ekene Ibekwe is averaging 10.4 points. Freshman Greivis Vasquez is averaging 10.1 points per game.
    • Strawberry has led the team in scoring eleven times this season while Jones has been the high man on ten occasions. Ibekwe and Gist have led the Terps in the scoring column in four games this season.
    • Maryland has outscored its opponents by an average of 12.2 points per game this season. That is the second best scoring margin in the ACC behind North Carolina (19.7).

    Seniors Ekene Ibekwe, Mike Jones and D.J. Strawberry are among elite company at the University of Maryland:
    • With nine points at Florida State, Mike Jones became the 43rd Terrapin to reach the 1,000-point plateau. Jones has 1,106 points for his career.
    • Ibekwe scored 17 points against Duke and now has 1,066 points as a Terrapin. With his 742 career rebounds, Ibekwe is became just the 21st Terrapin to record 1,000 points and 500 rebounds in a career. With 219 blocks to his credit he is just the fourth Terp to tally 1,000 points, 500 rebounds and 200 blocked shots, joining Lonny Baxter (1999-02), Terence Morris (1998-01) and Derrick Lewis (1985-88).
    • Ibekwe's 219 career blocked shots makes him just the 21st player in ACC history to reach the 200-blocks plateau.
    • Strawberry became the 45th player in school history to reach 1,000 points with an 18-point performance at NC State. He has 1,077 points for his career.

    Four Terrapins are rapidly climbing the school's all-time record book. Seniors D.J. Strawberry, Ekene Ibekwe, and Mike Jones have all made their mark in the Terrapin annals, along with junior James Gist:
    • Strawberry is fifth in school history with 195 career steals.
    • Ibekwe sits in fifth place on the school's all-time blocked shots list. The Carson, Calif., native has 219 career rejections at Maryland and has averaged 1.8 blocked shots per game.
    • With four rebounds against Duke, Ibekwe moved into 12th place on the school's all-time rebounding list. The senior forward has 742 career rebounds.
    • Ibekwe has attempted 467 career free throws and ranks 13th all-time at Maryland.
    • Senior Mike Jones has distinguished himself as one of the best shooters in the ACC and has rapidly moved up the school's all-time three pointers list. Jones has totaled 191 three-point field goals, which is second on the school's all-time list. Jones has hoisted 471 shots from beyond the arc, which is the fourth highest total in school history.
    • Gist has totaled 146 blocked shots during his three seasons in College Park. He is eighth on the school's all-time list and has averaged 1.7 blocks per game.

    Freshman Greivis Vasquez has tallied 140 assists this season and is well on his way to recording one of the top assist totals among freshman point guards at Maryland. Vasquez is fourth on the all-time freshman assists list, while Eric Hayes is eighth with 120.
    • Steve Blake (2000-03) owns the school record with 217 assists as a freshman in 2000.

    Maryland has been a dominant home team over the years.
    • The Terps are 777-276 (.740) all-time at home dating back to 1923-24.
    • Maryland went 14-3 (82.3%) at home last season and are 71-14 (.831) all-time at Comcast Center. The Terps have won 33 of their last 38 at home dating back to 2003-04.
    • The Terps are 226-49 (.823) at home under Gary Williams (155-35 at Cole Field House).
    • Maryland is 137-21 (.865) at home the last ten seasons (since 1997-98). The Terps are the only ACC team to have a better home winning percentage than Duke's road winning percentage (.810) over the past 10 seasons.
    • Maryland has won 38 of its last 39 non-conference games at Comcast Center under Williams.
    • The Terps are 125-2 (.984) in non-conference home games under Williams.
    • Maryland was 476-151 in 47 seasons at Cole Field House; 169-90 in 24 seasons at Ritchie Coliseum and 61-21 in eight seasons at The Gymnasium.

    Maryland is in its 54th season as a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Terps were a charter member of the conference in 1953-54 after 30 years as a member of the Southern Conference.
