CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Junior Ryan Moorer held No. 3 Virginia scoreless through five innings, but the Cavaliers broke the deadlock with two runs in the sixth en route to a 4-0 victory over the Maryland Terrapins in front of 2,616 fans at Davenport Field Sunday afternoon.
Virginia (37-10, 16-7) earned its fifth-straight series sweep over the Terrapins (23-24, 7-17), who were out-hit by an 11-5 margin.
Cavs starter Sean Doolittle (7-3) earned the victory after six innings of work, allowing four hits while striking out two. Moorer (3-4) was saddled with the loss, as he allowed the go-ahead runs, both unearned, in 6.1 innings of work.
First baseman Patrick Wingfield led the Cavalier offense with a 3-for-4, three-RBI day at the plate. Five Terps recorded hits, with junior Chad Durakis and sophomore Mike Moss each recording a double.
The first five innings saw neither team score, as Moorer and Doolittle were locked in a pitcher's duel. Both offenses combined for just six hits through the first five frames.
Junior Steve Braun nearly gave the Terrapins a two-run advantage in the top of the fifth inning. With Durakis standing on third base, Braun lined a ball over the left field fence, but left fielder Brandon Guyer was able to haul it in to prevent the home run.
Instead, the Cavaliers made the first mark on the scoreboard, taking a 2-0 lead in the sixth inning. After Guyer reached on a fielder's choice, second baseman David Adams drove him in on a triple to right field. First baseman Patrick Wingfield plated the second run of the inning as he singled up the middle to score Adams.
Virginia nearly expanded its lead in the seventh inning, but with runners at the corners, junior Brett Cecil induced a 4-6-3 double play to end the scoring threat. However, the Cavalier bats came alive again an inning later, but this time UVa was able to plate a pair of runs on Wingfield's two-RBI base hit up the middle.
Andrew Carraway and Casey Lambert worked three scoreless innings in relief to seal the victory.
Maryland will look to bounce back with a pair of midweek home games. The Terps host in-state foes Towson and Maryland-Eastern Shore on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively. Both games are set to begin at 7 p.m. at Shipley Field.
