TALLAHASSEE, FLA. -
Maryland dropped their opening game of the ACC Tournament to 17th ranked Georgia Tech Thursday, falling 5-1 to the Yellow Jackets. The Terrapins will resume play in the double elimination tournament tonight at 8 p.m. when they take on the NC State Wolfpack.
NC State, the tournament's second seed, was upset by Boston College by a score of 2-0. Maryland won one of three games versus NC State in a late April series in College Park earlier this season. The Terps rallied to beat the Wolfpack in the second game of the series by a score of 7-4 behind Lindsay Klein's two late home runs.
Whitney Haller hit her 15th home run of the season in the bottom of the first inning, and the Yellow Jackets added two more runs in the third inning to take a 3-0 lead. Haller had a pair of RBIs and two hits in three at bats in the game.
Trailing 5-0 in the seventh inning, Maryland loaded the bases to try and stage a late rally. Devon Williams drove in Jennifer Wellborn to put the Terps on the board, but the Terrapins could get no closer. Maryland is 0-3 against Georgia Tech this season.
Meredith Nelles and Abbey Welch split the pitching duties for Maryland, with Nelles getting the start and taking the loss to fall to 18-14 on the season. The two pitchers combined to strike out four Yellow Jackets.
Sarah Wood earned the win for Georgia Tech to improve to 11-1 on the year, and Tiffany Johnson entered the game in the seventh with the bases loaded to get her fourth save of the season.
