COLLEGE PARK, MD. - The Maryland Swimming and Diving Teams placed five athletes on the 2007 All-ACC Academic Teams, as announced on Thursday by ACC Commissioner John D. Swofford.
Three men and two women were selected to represent the Terrapins on the all-academic teams. To be eligible for consideration, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during his academic career.
Sasha Malanina and Yelena Skalinskaya were selected from the women's side, while Tony Miller, Kevin Reardon and Tim Shepard were chosen for the men's team.
Malanina, a senior finance major, finished second in the ACC for the 400 IM. She won the event a year ago, and earned an Honorable Mention All-American finish at the NCAAs in 2006.
Skalinskaya, a sophomore, is currently undecided on a major. She ranked 10th in the 50 free (23.52) and sixth in the 100 free this season with an NCAA B-cut time of 50.83.
Shepard, an accounting major, and Miller, a Chemical Engineering major, were senior captains this past season for the men's squad. Shepard swam the team's fastest time in the 200 individual medley this season (1:56.80) at the Terrapin Cup, and Miller posted the team's best season time for the 400 IM (4:10.74), also established at this year's Terrapin Cup.
Reardon, a freshman marketing major, posted strong times in the 100-yard freestyle, and also swam in the 50, 200, and 500 yard freestyles.
Malanina, Skalinskaya, Miller and Shepard are all repeat All-ACC Academic honorees.
