Venezuela Concludes Play In FIBA Championships

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - University of Maryland sophomore guard Greivis Vasquez (Caracas, Venezuela/Montrose Christian) finished play in the FIBA Americas Championships with the Venezuelan national team Thursday (August 30).

After finishing the preliminary round 1-3, the Venezuelan national team moved on to the quarter final round. Argentina handed the Venezuelans a 98-63 loss on Monday (August 27) in the first game of the quarter finals. Vasquez scored nine points, grabbed three rebounds and recorded one assist in 23 minutes against the Argentineans.

Vasquez scored nine points, hauled in four rebounds and dished out two assists in 21 minutes on Tuesday (August 28) as Venezuela captured an 88-79 victory over Uruguay. He tallied 10 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals against Puerto Rico as Venezuela fell, 92-63. In the final game of the quarter final round, Venezuela dropped a 101-91 decision to Mexico. Vasquez recorded 17 points, four rebounds, one assist, one steal and one blocked shot in 26 minutes.

The Venezuelans finished the competition 2-6. Vasquez averaged 13.1 points, 4.1 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game. He played 27.5 minutes per game and connected on 36 percent (16 of 45) of his three-point field goals. Vasquez turned in his best game against the Virgin Islands, scoring 18 points to go with 10 assists and eight rebounds in 38 minutes of action.

Vasquez earned ACC All-Freshman honorable mention in 2006-07. He finished the year with 149 assists, the third-highest assist total among freshmen in the history of the school. Vasquez ranked sixth in the ACC in assists (4.62) and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.71). He averaged 9.8 points and 3.3 rebounds per game last season. Vasquez narrowly missed the first triple-double at Maryland in 20 years as he posted 13 points, 12 assists and nine rebounds at Duke on February 28.
