Postgame Notes
Tenacious D: The Terps' defensive intensity enabled them to limit the Bison to 17 first-half points - the lowest total by a Maryland opponent in a half since limiting Delaware State to 13 first-half points on Dec. 28, 2005. Bucknell's 52 points are the fewest allowed in 19 games for the Terps dating back to last season (48 points surrendered to Holy Cross on Jan. 8, 2008).
Cliff Notes: Guard/forward Cliff Tucker scored a career-high 14 points while playing just 19 minutes during the season-opening victory. Tucker tied his previous career-best of 10 points when he slashed to the basket for the layup with 18:37 remaining in the second half. His previous 10-point performance came during the 16th game of Maryland's 2007-08 campaign - a Jan. 8 win over Holy Cross.
Efficient Performance: Forward Landon Milbourne scored a game-high 16 points on just nine field goal attempts, hitting six-for-six on free throw attempts.
Venezuelan Sensation: Reigning All-ACC honoree Greivis Vasquez picked up where he left off last season to commence the 2008-09 campaign, scoring 13 points and dishing a game-high six assists. The Terps guard now has scored in double figures in 28 of his last 29 contests.
Spreading the Wealth: Maryland got most everyone involved during its victory over the Bison. Eight different Terps scored points during the first half, and 11 of the 13 players who saw action entered the scorer's book on Friday. Four Terps - Tucker, Milbourne, Vasquez and guard Adrian Bowie - scored in double figures, and 11 Terps played at least 10 minutes.
For Starters: Maryland improved to 62-28 (.689) all-time in season openers and have now won eight of their last nine openers. The team is 17-3 (.850) in season openers under Gary Williams.
That's Comcastic: The Terps now have won 54 of 58 non-conference games since moving into Comcast Center in 2002. The team now stands 86-20 (.811) all-time in games played on its current homecourt.
Milestone Fast-Approaching: Williams, the winningest coach in Maryland men's basketball history, now has 398 career victories as the Terrapins head coach.
Coaching Legend: Now with 605 career victories, Williams remains in sixth place among active NCAA Division I coaches. He stands four wins behind Houston coach Tom Penders (whose squad ALSO has one win thus far this season) for fifth place all-time.
First Hoop: Forward/Center Braxton Dupree notched the Terps' first basket of the season when he converted from under the hoop off a nice feed from Vasquez. He is the first non-guard to tally the Terps' first score of a season since James Gist hit a jumper to open the 2005-06 season.
Trey Streak Intact: With guard Eric Hayes' 3-point field goal just more than four minutes into the game, the Terps extended their streak of hitting at least one shot from beyond the arc to 321 consecutive games. Vasquez (two), Bowie and freshman Jin Soo Kim also converted 3-point baskets versus Bucknell.
Series Record: With its win on Friday, Maryland improved to 7-0 all-time against Bucknell, including 3-0 versus the Bison in season openers.
