COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Fans can catch their first glimpse of the 2008 Maryland women's lacrosse team, ranked No. 4 in the country by Lacrosse Magazine, when it takes on the England national team at noon on Thursday at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. It is the only time Terrapins fans can catch the red and black this year before the regular season begins next weekend.
Second-year head coach Cathy Reese has an experienced team this season with 10 seniors and adds a talented mix of newcomers to the equation. Reese guided the Terps to a 16-4 mark in 2007 and advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament.
Along with the No. 4 ranking from Lacrosse Magazine, two individuals have been recognized this preseason. Seniors Dana Dobbie and Kelly Kasper were recognized as two of the top 20 players in the country by Inside Lacrosse. The publication listed Dobbie as the No. 3 player in the country while Kasper came in at No. 7. The Terps were the only team in the ACC with two players named on the list.
Inside Lacrosse will be coming out with its preseason poll next week.
Next week leading up to the season opener at UMass on February 22, the 2008 season outlook will be available online at umterps.com in three installments. The Maryland attack will be featured on Monday, February 18 with the midfield and defense following the next two days on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively.
The Terps have three road games before returning to play at College Park. Maryland travels to UMass and Boston College next weekend before facing No. 3 Duke on March 1.
The Maryland home opener is slated for Tuesday, March 4 against No. 2 Virginia. The matchup is slated for 7:00 p.m. and will be televised nationally by CSTV.
