ATLANTA, Ga. -
The Maryland Terrapins men's and women's swimming and diving teams will head to Atlanta, Ga. for the 2008 ACC Championships. The women's competition begins Wednesday, February 20 and continues until February 23, while the men's team will compete February 27 until March 1. A schedule of events is listed at the back of the notes.
2007 ACC Overview
The Terps finished the season with an eighth-place finish at the 2007 ACC Championships. In the first day of individual event competition, former Terp Danny Gray qualified for the championship final in the 50-yard freestyle and took third overall with an NCAA B-cut time of 20.01. Junior Dong Kim won the consolation final for the 50-yard freestyle, taking ninth overall with a career-best time of 20.20. The following day, Kim also won the consolation final for the 100-yard backstroke establishing a career-best time and breaking the school record with 48.93.
Kim's top placement at the ACCs came on the final day of competition where he qualified for the championship final in the 100-yard freestyle and placed third overall with an NCAA B-cut time of 44.57.
Gray followed Kim in sixth place for the 100-yard freestyle after swimming an NCAA B-cut time of 44.40 in the prelim. In the 100-yard butterfly, sophomore Aleksandar Damjanic qualified for the championship final, taking sixth with a season-best time of 48.71. He was also a championship finalist in the 200-yard butterfly, finishing fifth and racking up another season-best time (1:48.28).
The Terrapin women compiled a total of 332 points for a sixth place finish at the 2007 ACCs, with several notable individual swims. Former Terp Sasha Malanina led the Terps with a second-place finish in the 400-yard individual medley with an NCAA B-cut time of 4:17.62. Malanina also qualified for the championship final and took fourth with an NCAA B-cut time of 2:02.14 in the 20-yard individual medley.
Sophomore Yelena Skalinskaya was a championship finalist in the 50-yard freestyle, taking eighth overall after swimming an NCAA B-cut time of 23.31 in the prelim.
Sophomore Jen Vogel qualified for the championship final in the 200-yard butterfly placing fourth with a career-best NCAA B-cut time of 2:01.43. Also in the championship final for the 200-yard butterfly, sophomore Patty DeScenza took sixth with an NCAA B-cut time of 2:02.39, and Rossi finished in eighth place with a time of 2:04.18.
Sophomore Nina Rossi was a championship finalist in the 400-yard individual medley, taking seventh place with a season-best time of 4:25.27. Sophomore Jackie Davidson also qualified for the championship final and took eighth overall in the 100-yard backstroke with a season-best time (56.63).
