Pinch-hitter Bill Rice ripped a two-out, bases-clearing double to erase a two-run deficit and lift the University of Maryland to a 6-5 victory in a non-conference college baseball game Wednesday played before 349 at Shipley Field.
Maryland improved to 13-11 with the victory, while the Retrievers fell to 6-10.
Jensen Pupa went 4-for-5 to lead a 10-hit Terrapin offense, including a double. He also scored three runs for Maryland. Nick Jowers chipped in with a 2-for-3 night.
Shawn Retz led the UMBC offense with three hits and a pair of RBIs.
UMBC led 5-3 heading into the Maryland seventh inning. Pupa opened with a single against reliever David Divita and Curtis Lazar followed one out later with a walk. Jowers was then hit by a pitch to load the bases. Dan Blewett came on in relief for the Retrievers and struck out Gerry Spessard.
Rice then smacked a two-out double to center, scoring all three runs and giving the Terrapins the lead.
Brad Taylor came on in relief for the Terps and threw two perfect innings to earn his second save.
Terp reliever Kevin Biringer earned the win, improving to 2-1. He allowed four hits and one run over four innings of relief, striking out four.
UMBC starter Sean Rae had a solid outing, giving up three runs while scattering eight hits over the first six innings.
The Retrievers scored three runs in the top of the third to take a 4-1 lead, taking advantage of a pair of Terrapin errors and an RBI single by Retz. Down 5-1, Maryland scored a single run in the fifth on an RBI by Chad Durakis, and added another in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Joe Palumbo.
Maryland hosts Atlantic Coast Conference rival Clemson in a three-game series this weekend, with the opener set for Friday night at 7 p.m. The series continues Saturday at 4 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.
