COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Senior Dana Dobbie, the reigning ACC Co-Player of the Week, recorded five goals, eight draw controls, and four caused turnovers to lead the No. 3 Maryland women's lacrosse team to a 15-10 win against Towson on March 26 at Ludwig Field. Classmate Lauren Cohen added her second-straight hat trick.
Dobbie notched her hat trick less than seven minutes into the game. Senior Katie Princiotto and sophomore Caitlyn McFadden chipped in with a goal and two assists apiece while seniors Kelly Kasper and Katie Princiotto had a goal and an assist.
Senior Allie Buote was credited with a season-high 14 saves in goal, her second-straight game with 10 or more stops. That number tied her career high.
For the fourth game in a row, Maryland jumped out to an early lead and this time it was a 5-0 one which led to a 12-2 advantage after the first half. Dobbie won the opening draw and Kasper scored for the Terps 28 seconds in when she made a move past a defender on the right side.
Dobbie then scored her three-consecutive goals to push the lead to four at the 22:07 mark. Her first goal was a free position and then Princiotto assisted on the next two.
McFadden then capped the five-goal run 52 seconds later with her goal after Dobbie won the ensuing draw.
Towson ended the run four minutes later when Hillary Fratzke scored the first goal for the Tigers with 17:28 left in the first half. Meggie McNamara then added another unassisted goal for Towson to make it 5-2 with 11:57 left.
The Terps ended the half with seven unanswered goals to take a 12-2 lead at the break. Cohen scored two goals in the run while McFadden notched her pair of assists in that span.
Cohen got her hat trick with the first goal in the second half as she scored 1:44 into the frame but Towson responded with two more goals, both by Fratzke and McNamara again to make it 13-4.
Dobbie added another goal for the Terps at the 18:20 mark with help from Kasper to push the lead to 14-4. Two minutes later Fratzke set up Lauren McAfee for a score before Britt Woodfield cut the deficit to 14-6 seven minutes later.
Freshman Helen McCutcheon scored the first goal of her career to end the Towson streak and push the Maryland back to nine with 8:12 to go, but the Tigers scored the game's last four goals to make it a five-goal game.
Mary Hammond scored the last two goals of the game and Woodfield assisted on a pair of scores.
Towson (6-3) was led by Fratzke who had two goals and two assists while Woodfield recorded a goal and two helpers. McNamara, McAfee, and Hammond each scored two goals and Mandy Corry made 11 saves in the cage.
The Terps (9-1) are off this weekend but head to Chapel Hill, N.C. to take part in the ACC/ALC Challenge. Maryland will take on Penn State on April 4 and then Ohio State on April 6.
