COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland's senior class shined in their regular season home finale, scoring 19 of the Terrapins' 32 points as the No. 3 women's lacrosse team beat Virginia Tech, 20-3, on April 19 at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. With the win, the Terps clinched the top seed in next weekend's ACC Championship.
Maryland (14-1, 4-1 ACC) will face the winner of the game between North Carolina and Boston College in the semifinals next Friday night in Charlottesville. The game is slated for 5:30 p.m. at Scott Stadium. The Tar Heels and the Eagles will play on Thursday for the right to face the Terps.
Senior Kelly Kasper led all scorers with a goal and four assists. Kasper now has 89 career assists which ties her with Allison Comito for fifth place all-time. Kasper also has 220 career points which now stands as the 10th most ever at Maryland.
Senior Katie Princiotto pitched in with three goals and an assist as did sophomore Caitlyn McFadden. Seniors Lauren Cohen and Dana Dobbie both had three points as Dobbie scored a hat trick and Cohen recorded two goals and an assist. Dobbie also paced the Terps with 10 draw controls.
Maryland dominated Virginia Tech on both ends of the field. The Terps owned a 34-9 shot advantage and a 20-5 difference on draw controls. The Terps' defense held the Hokies scoreless for two long stretches of 23:55 spanning the first and second halves and then did not allow a goal for the final 23:37.
It was the largest win for Maryland since a 22-4 victory against Temple in the NCAA Tournament back on May 13, 2004. With the win, the Terps extended their win streak to 12 games which is the first time they have had a steak that long since 2001 when they won their last national championship.
After Kasper scored the first goal of the game 24 seconds in, the rest of the first 13 minutes of the game were sloppy for Maryland. The Hokies were deliberate in their attack and struck with 20:13 showing on the scoreboard as Jacquelyn Duggins scored to tie the game 1-1.
Sophomore Amanda Spinnenweber scored 43 seconds later to give Maryland the lead back but Rachel Culp went unassisted to tie the game again with 17:32 remaining in the half.
Dobbie won the ensuing draw and Maryland never looked back. McFadden found Princiotto for her first goal of the game at the 16:10 mark and the Terps rattled off eight more goals to end the half with an 11-2 lead.
McFadden scored for Maryland out of the locker room in the second half and then Kady McBrearty broke the Hokies' 23:55 scoring drought with an unassisted goal to make it 12-3. Maryland would then dominate the last 23:37 of the game with eight unanswered goals.
