No. 3 Women's Lacrosse Advances To Quarterfinals With 20-7 Win Against Temple

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Senior Katie Pumphrey ignited the Maryland offense with her first goal of the season and the third-seeded Terrapins ended the game with a 12-1 run en route to a 20-7 victory on Mother's Day in the first round of the 2008 NCAA Women's Lacrosse Championship. The Terps will host No. 12 Duke on Saturday, May 17 at 1:00 p.m. in the quarterfinals at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex.
The Blue Devils beat sixth-seeded Georgetown, 10-8, in Washington, D.C. Duke will enter the game at 12-7 while Maryland improved to 18-2 with its win.
The closest parking for any fans attending next Saturday's game will be in Lot 4I, which is the lot directly behind the bleachers. The game will be taking place during Maryland's commencement ceremonies that day. More detailed instructions for parking will be available later this week.
Three Maryland seniors paced the offense with five points as Dana Dobbie, Casey Magor, and Katie Princiotto each had three goals and two assists. Dobbie also added nine draw controls giving her 123 this season and 331 in her career, both NCAA records.
Senior Kelly Kasper added a goal and three assists as did sophomore Caitlyn McFadden. Freshman Sarah Mollison scored a pair of goals and had an assist off the bench.
Maryland opened the game on a 6-1 run in the first 9:09 as Magor and fellow senior Lauren Cohen both had a pair of goals in the early going. Kasper notched three of her assists in the opening run.
Whitney Richards, who scored Temple's first goal at the 25:25 mark to tie the game at 1-1, put an end to the streak when she scored unassisted with 19:32 on the clock. Freshman Brandi Jones responded with her first postseason goal a minute later, but the Owls tacked on two more to pull within three, 7-4 with 11:13 left.
Chelsea Rosik used a pass from Hillary Richards to score and then Berkley Summerlin added an unassisted tally for Temple's two goals. After sophomore Amanda Spinnenweber scored off a feed from McFadden, Summerlin put in the last goal of the half on a free position with 4:18 to make the halftime score 8-5 in favor of the Terps.
The Owls came out of the locker room and scored the first goal of the second half 2:32 in to cut the lead to 8-6. The Temple defense had kept Maryland at bay for 13:08 before it finally struck again.
Pumphrey, a captain of the defense, is the one who broke through for Maryland. After Dobbie won the draw following Temple's goal, she dished to an open Pumphrey in the midfield. Pumphrey knifed through the Temple defense in transition and used her speed to get open. With nothing but an open net in front of her, she fired and scored her first goal of the year and second of her career to make it 9-6.
The Terps' sideline erupted and Maryland did not look back as it used that goal to start a 12-1 run to seal the win. The Terps used eight different goal-scorers in the final 27:04 with Dobbie earning a hat trick in that span and Princiotto adding two goals. Dobbie also added her two assists in the final run.
Summerlin led the Owls (13-7) with three goals while Whitney Richards had two goals and an assist.
