COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland Terrapins (17-2) have earned the No. 3 seed in the 2008 NCAA Women's Lacrosse Championship. The Terps will host Atlantic 10 champion Temple (13-6) on Sunday, May 11 at 1:00 p.m. at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. The winner of Sunday's game will meet either No. 6 seed Georgetown or Duke in the quarterfinals.
The last time Maryland earned a top four seed was in 2004 when it was also the third seed. The Terps faced Temple in the opening round that season as well and won, 22-4, in College Park. Maryland and Temple have met 27 times with the Terps holding a 16-10-1 record.
The Terps earned one of eight at-large bids to this year's tournament and are making their 19th consecutive appearance in the championship. The Terps have won the most national championships in NCAA women's lacrosse history with 10, including seven straight from 1995-2001.
Maryland, which is 17-2 with both losses coming by one goal, is coming off of a pair of dominating performances in its last two non-conference outings last week with an 18-9 win at No. 6 Princeton and a 20-4 triumph at Loyola.
Maryland sports the seventh-best scoring offense in the country and also boasts one of the top scoring defenses as it ranks eighth. The Terps are also second in the country in draw controls with senior Dana Dobbie accounting for 114 of them, a new NCAA single season record.
Temple earned an automatic bid to the tournament when it beat Massachusetts in the Atlantic 10 championship game, 10-3, in Amherst, Mass. The Owls stand at 13-6 but do not have any wins against ranked teams this season. Temple has faced two teams ranked in the latest Inside Lacrosse media poll with a 15-7 loss to Princeton and a 15-2 setback at Penn on Saturday.
Temple's offense ranks 20th in the nation but its defense is currently ninth, allowing 9.09 goals per game. Whitney Richards ranks 16th in the country in points with 75 and Bridget McMullan, a senior goalie, ranks 10th in the nation with a 9.54 goals against average.
The Owls also have a pair of players in the top 10 nationally in caused turnovers. Richards leads the team with 39 while Berkley Summerlin has accounted for 35 miscues.
Tickets for the game can be purchased beginning at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday morning through the Terrapin Ticket Office at 1-800-462-TERP (8377) or online by clicking here. Tickets will be $6 for adults and $4 for students and seniors.
