COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Davin Meggett eyed the pylon near the end of his 74-yard burst and sent his body airborne, lunging for the front of the end zone. The Terrapins running back landed just short of the goal line, but it did not matter - he punched it in for six the very next play.

It was that sort of performance for the Maryland offense during its scrimmage Saturday evening at Chevy Chase Bank Field at Byrd Stadium. Offensive firepower and long gains were plentiful, as the unit had five plays of at least 40 yards - in three quarters of football.

Meggett, a true freshman who has been one of the more impressive players during camp, might have best exemplified the offensive performance during the scrimmage, the second of three during preseason camp. Rushing 12 times for 157 yards and two touchdowns, Meggett had 123 of his yards on just two carries, having also raced 49 yards to paydirt later in the scrimmage.

"The concern I have is we had too many long runs against our defense. We can't have that," head coach Ralph Friedgen said. "On the other hand, I thought Davin (pronounced DAY-vin) Meggett for his second scrimmage had a heck of a scrimmage. I thought he ran harder. He wasn't as cautious as he's been, and he showed what kind of speed he has once he gets out into the open."

Each of the three quarterbacks vying for the starting spot contributed to the offensive outburst. Chris Turner threw for a scrimmage-high 124 yards, including a 53-yard completion to wide receiver Adrian Cannon. Jordan Steffy completed a scrimmage-high nine passes for 63 yards, and Josh Portis found wideout Ronnie Tyler for a 63-yard touchdown during one of three scoring drives he orchestrated.

Friedgen, who liked what he saw Saturday from each quarterback, said he does not intend to announce a starter for the season opener against Delaware until Monday at the earliest.

"I really think that we have three quarterbacks that can play, and it wouldn't surprise me if all three of them played during the season," Friedgen said. "That wouldn't shock me in the least. What we have to do is get one that we can win with, and hopefully we can win with all three."

Fourth-string quarterback Jamarr Robinson also got into the act, throwing a 40-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Emani Lee-Odai on the scrimmage's final play.

Cannon and Lee-Odai notched 77 and 76 receiving yards, respectively, to pace the Terrapins aerial attack. Running backs Da'Rel Scott and Gary Douglas each had 39 rushing yards in limited action.

Despite giving up several big plays, the Terps defense did manage to play opportunistically at times.

Sophomore defensive back Michael Carter picked off two passes during the scrimmages final quarter and returned one 30 yards to the end zone. True freshman Kenny Tate, who recently moved from wideout to defensive back to bolster the team's secondary, also recorded an interception to complement his strong performance returning punts and kickoffs. His long kickoff return went for 33 yards, enabling the offense to start the drive at its own 40-yard-line

"To me, Tate really has great hands," Friedgen said. "We put him back fielding punts because if we get into a punt safe situation we're going to need a secondary guy back there. He does it so naturally. I thought he had a good run back there on the kickoff. I thought he probably should have scored on the pick, but he made a good play on that too."

Two seniors projected to start on defense also stood out for that unit during the scrimmage. Linebacker Moise Fokou accounted for two of the team's six sacks, and defensive back Jeff Allen added a pair of pass breakups.

True freshman linebacker Demetrius Hartsfield had a scrimmage-high seven tackles, while defensive backs Terrell Skinner and Jamari McCollough chipped in with six stops apiece.

Place-kicker Obi Egekeze connected on three of four field goal attempts, including a long of 47 yards. Senior David May registered two tackles while handling kickoff duties.

The Terps have the day off Sunday before returning to the field Monday morning to start their third and final week of preseason camp.

The team will hold its final scrimmage of the preseason Thursday.
