Terps Swimming and Diving Picks Up Three Wins Saturday

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland swimming and diving team had a solid finish Saturday following two days of competition against Villanova, Pittsburgh and Penn State at Eppley Recreation Natatorium. The Maryland women dropped Pitt and Villanova, the men upended Pitt, but both squads fell short against Penn State.
On the women's side, Jackie Davidson captured the 200 backstroke (2:03.39) to lead the Terps. Junior Jen Vogel took second in the 200 IM (2:06.68) while Annie Fittin also took runner-up in the 50 free (24.07). Freshman Alexa Hamilton continues to pace the Terps in the 200 breast, registering a second-place finish in the event with a time of 2:19.78, just shy of her season-high. Fellow classmate Ginny Glover solidified a third-place finish in the 200 free (1:52.33). In the relays, Maryland took second in both the 400 medley (3:50.11) and 400 free (3:28.37) courtesy of the teams of Davidson, Hamilton, Vogel and Fittin in the medley and Fittin, Glover, Laura Wright and Davidson in the free. Freshman Alisa Kurbatova finished a sweep in diving, winning the 3-meter (283.20).
For the Maryland men, Andy Dilz led the way, winning the 200 breast (2:04.37). Mitch Challcombe had another good day in the pool, securing a season-best 1:55.14 in the 200 IM for a third-place finish. Freshman Andrew Relihan won the event (1:54.05) while fellow rookie Sean Stewart took second in the 200 fly (1:51.80). Stewart also had a season-best in the 500 free (4:41.47). Chris Rouchard took third in the 500 free (4:38.86). The men also picked up a second-place finish in the 400 medley relay (3:25.37) via the combo of Challacombe, Eric Cullen, Aleksander Damjanic and Stuart Butts.
"This competition really marks the beginning of our championship season," head coach Sean Schimmel said. "We have competitions almost every weekend right up until the ACC Championships. Our team did a good job setting the tone and swimming and competing at a high level this weekend. I think we started our championship season off on a good note."
Maryland remains at home next weekend, playing host to Richmond and Miami in women's action next Saturday at 1 p.m.
