CARY, N.C. -
Kristin Reed and Alex Lundy each earned individual titles and the University of Maryland women earned the team championship Friday at the Great American XC Festival collegiate races held at the WakeMed Park.
The event was held on the same course that will host the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships later this month.
Lundy posted a convincing individual victory margin of 18 seconds over Andrew Chebii of Winston-Salem State. Lundy ran 23:52 over the 8-kilometer men's course. Lundy now has two firsts and an eighth in his three races this season, having also won at the UMES Lid-Lifter in early September.
The Maryland men finished second in the team standings with 53 points, trailing only Duke, which had four in the top 10 and its five scorers in the top 14 to finish with 41 points. Maryland had four runners among the top 12 scorers. Georgia Tech placed third with 78 points.
The Terps have earned a first and two seconds as a team in the 2009 season.
Also for Maryland, junior transfer Kyle Gaffney was eighth overall in 24:50, Mike Cator was 13th in 25:01, followed by Ben Diestel, who was 14th in 25:06. Dan Fishbein was 27th overall in 25:26 to account for the Terps' final scorer.
Reed won the women's 5-kilometer race in 17:47, earning a 16-second victory over Mary Kate Dubard of Georgia Tech. It was the second individual title of the season for the Terrapin senior and gave her three top-three finishes in her three races this fall.
Maryland, which has earned team titles in each of its three races this season, finished with a strong total of 23 points in the women's event, placing its five scorers among the top eight and six in the top nine.
Georgia Tech was second with 66 points, while Maryland's B team placed third with 70 points behind senior Lindsay Ritchings, who was sixth overall in 18:17.
Freshman Julie Fricke was third overall for the Terps in 18:04, with senior Christina Nelson in fourth at 18:08. Angeli Sivaraman was eighth (18:20), Ashley Campbell placed ninth (18:22) and Halsey Sinclair was 10th (18:25) as Maryland's A and B teams put seven runners in the top 10 individually in the field, which drew 14 teams and 119 runners.
Behind Ritchings, the Terps' B squad had Andrea Rothschild (12th, 18:31), Ashley Cromartie (20th, 18:49); Ashlyn Sinclair (21st, 18:52) and Danielle Karagannis (24th, 19:03) account for its five scorers.
