Katie Usher hit a match-high .600 with nine kills and teammate Maddi Lee added 10 kills Friday evening at Comcast Pavilion against Virginia, but Virginia knocked off the University of Maryland volleyball team, 3-0.
Virginia swept the match by scores of 25-19, 25-23 and 25-19 to improve to 8-13 and 3-7 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Maryland lost its fifth straight match to fall to 10-13 and 2-8 in the league.
The Cavaliers led the first set nearly the entire way, hitting .333 as a team en route to a six-point win.
Set No. 2 was the most competitive of the evening as the score changed hands 10 times and was tied on 11 occasions. Maryland held a late lead of 20-18. However, tied at 22 apiece, Virginia took three of the next four points, winning the pivotal set on a kill by Simone Asque, one of her match-best 21 on the night.
After holding an early 8-5 lead in the third set, the Terps could not hold on. Virginia answered with a 13-4 run to take command of the set before winning by six points.
Sam Rosario had a solid match defensively, recording 21 digs.
The Terps wore pink uniforms, as it was the program's annual "Dig Pink" match to support breast cancer awareness.
Maryland returns to Comcast Pavilion Sunday at 1 p.m. to face the Virginia Tech Hokies.
