Terps Open Men's Hoop Season Friday

    COLLEGE PARK, Md. -

    Maryland opens its 2009-10 men's basketball season on Friday night at 8 p.m. in Comcast Center against Charleston Southern University. The Terrapins are coming off a 21-14 season in which they advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament and the semifinals of the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament. The game is the regular-season opener for each team.

    The game will be telecast live on Comcast SportsNet and can be heard on the Terrapin Sports Radio Network, with flagships WJZ-FM (105.7) and ESPN1300 in Baltimore and 106.7 The Fan in Washington, D.C. Pregame on the netowrk begins at 7 p.m.

  • Maryland has received considerable preseason attention this year from both the local and national media. The Terps have been rated as high as 17th in preseason rankings, with three magazines touting the Terps in the 20th spot. In the official preseason rankings by ESPN/USA Today and the Associated Press, Maryland was ranked 26th in each poll.

  • Senior guard Greivis Vasquez has also gotten some preseason accolades. He was listed on Dick Vitale's All-Solid Gold second team in his season preview recently in USA Today. Vasquez, a member of the Wooden Award and Naismith Award preseason watch lists, was listed second in the nation among shooting guards by The Sporting News and sixth in the nation among point guards by CBS Sports.com.

  • Vasquez is part of a senior trio that leads Maryland into the new year. Vasquez, Landon Milbourne and Eric Hayes return for their final season in College Park having appeared collectively in 287 games and having started 217.

  • The Terrapins come into Friday's game seeking their 100th victory in Comcast Center. Maryland comes into the contest with Charleston Southern with a 99-20 mark in the seven years it's played home games in one of the best on-campus facilities in the country.
