COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland men's swimming and diving team earned a split Saturday after defeating Towson but narrowly falling to UMBC at Eppley Recreation Natatorium.

Chris Rouchard was victorious in the 500 free (4:37.66) with Honore sliding in with a second-place finish (4:41.67).
Maryland also performed well in the mid-distance, earning six top-three finishes Saturday. Andrew Relihan won the 200 back (1:51.73) with Alex Spina finishing third (1:54.28). Rouchard (1:43.00) and Aleksandar Damjanic went 2-3 in the 200 free. Sean Stewart won the 200 fly (1:52.27) with Roger Dent taking third (1:53.65).
Mitch Challacombe won the 100 back (51.65) and Damjanic took first in the 100 fly (50.23).
On the boards, Eric Sachs took home a pair of first-place finishes in the 1-meter (262.40) and 3-meter (279.80).
"Our guys had a lot of event winners, which was nice to see," head coach Sean Schimmel said. "We came up a little short on the depth side but we put ourselves in a good position to make a championship run next weekend at the Terp Cup."
Maryland returns to competition when the Terps welcome William & Mary, Navy, Mary Washington, Villanova, Towson, Drexel and Connecticut to College Park for the 2009 Terrapin Cup Thursday, Nov. 19 - Saturday, Nov. 21 at Eppley Recreation Natatorium.
