Terrapin Cup Begins Thursday

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland men's swimming and diving team plays host to the three-day 2009 Terrapin Cup beginning Thursday at the Eppley Recreation Natatorium.

Maryland split with local foes Towson and UMBC in their last outing. Andrew Relihan picked up his first career ACC Swimmer of the Week award for his effort. Relihan won the 200 back in a time of 1:51.73, and came in second in the 100 breast (58.55) and the 200 IM (1:53.57) as the Terrapins split a tri-meet with in-state foes Towson (225-69) and UMBC (148-152). The Terps also picked up points on the boards as Eric Sachs won both the 1-and 3-meter diving events.

The Terps finished second last season in head coach Sean Schimmel's first Terrapin Cup.

Morning sessions for the 2009 Terrapin Cup begin at 10 a.m. with the night edition kicking off at 6 p.m.

Terrapin Cup Opponent Notes:
William & Mary (3-1)
-Junior diver Mike Newcomb was named CAA Diver of the Week (11/3). In the Tribe's win over Davidson (10/30), Newcombe won the 1-meter diving event with a score of 211.71.

Navy (7-0)
-Senior Adam Meyer was named Patriot League Swimmer of the Week (11/10) for the second time this season. On Saturday, Meyer won the 200m butterfly with a time of 2:01.94, the ninth-fastest in school history. By also winning the 400m individual medley at 4:23.23, the Midshipman broke his personal record as well as Lejeune Hall's.
-Sophomore diver Ben Nicholas was named the Patriot League Diver of the Week (11/10) for the first time in his career. Nicholas impressed the league by posting a score of 279.30 in the 1-meter event on Saturday to get his first career win.

Mary Washington (5-1)
-Senior Eagle swimmer Justin Anderson was selected as the CAC Men's Swimming Athlete of the Week (11/10). In his team's tri-meet with York and Hood (11/6), Anderson posted three new pool records, won two individual events (100 and 200 freestyle), and helped Mary Washington win two more relays (200 medley and 400 freestlye).

Villanova (1-5)
-In Villanova's season-opener against West Virginia, (11/14), the team posted 11 season-best times and five Wildcats placed third in individual events. In the 200 freestyle relay, Ted Sukramani, Nick Williams, Scott Thiede and Braden Clarke finished fewer than three seconds behind the Mountaineers.

Towson (0-7)
-Senior Devin Kirby was named the CAA Men's Swimmer of the Week (11/15), the first of his career. The Tiger won the 50-yard freestyle with a season-best time of 21.03 seconds against Maryland and UMBC (11/14).
-During the opening session of the CAA "Pod" Meet at the University of Delaware (11/6), sophomore Wesley Foltz led the Tigers, placing third in the 1650-yard freestyle with a time of 16:41.83.

Drexel (4-3)
-For his performance against Binghamton (11/14), junior Ian Devnick was selected as the CAA Men's Diver of the Week. The former 2008 CAA Diver of the Year won the 1-meter event with a score of 247.50, over 28 points higher than the second-place finisher.

Connecticut (3-1)
-The Huskies men's team added two more wins to their record as they topped both Brown and Laval (11/14). Leading the way for UConn was senior Steve Ferreira who won the one-meter and three-meter dives.
