Men's Hoops Play Host to UNH Friday

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland finishes its season-opening homestand on Friday night with an 8 p.m. game against New Hampshire. The Terrapins, now 2-0, are ranked 25th in this week's Associated Press poll and seek a sweep of the opening three home games before heading to the EA Sports Maui Invitational next week.

The game will be streamed live on the Internet on TerpsTV. The pregame show on the Terrapin Sports Network will begin at 7 p.m.

Washington, D.C., area fans will be able to catch the pregame show in its entirety on WJFK-FM-106.7, then will be able to switch to WTGB-FM-94.7 to catch the game itself.

In their most recent outing, the Terrapins put in an outstanding defensive effort in a 71-42 victory over Fairfield. Maryland held the Stags to just 29 percent shooting from the floor and just 19 percent after halftime. The Terps outscored Fairfield, 41-20, in the second half to roll to the victory.

The 42 points allowed by the Terrapins on Tuesday were the fewest allowed since 1/6/04 when Maryland defeated Maryland-Eastern Shore, 87-38. After allowing only 51 in the opener to Charleston Southern, the Terps are giving up 46.5 points per game in the early-going, with opponents hitting 29 percent from the floor in two games.

Maryland's margins of 38 points and 29 points are the best in the opening two games of the season since the 1991-92 season, when the Terps beat Mount St. Marys (83-53) and UMES (115-60). The Terrapins have been off to 2-0 starts 14 times in Gary Williams' previous 20 seasons, and have had 3-0 starts 11 times. The best start in Gary Williams' tenure at Maryland came in the 1996-97 season, when the Terps won their first 11 games of the year before losing in overtime to Georgia in the finals of the Rainbow Classic.

Senior guard Eric Hayes has continued his hot streak from the end of last season. After scoring in double figures in each of the Terrapins' first two games this year (10 vs. Charleston Southern, team-high 14 vs. Fairfield), Hayes has now scored in double figures in his last seven games in a streak dating back to last season. He's averaging 14.3 points per game in that seven-game streak.

Sean Mosley, Landon Milbourne and Hayes have each scored in double figures in each of the Terps' first two games.

New Hampshire comes to College Park having won its season-opener, 91-45, over Suffolk on Nov. 14. Center Dane DiLiegro had a double-double for the Wildcats in the opener, scoring 14 points and grabbing 15 rebounds in just 22 minutes. He was one of five players in double figures for UNH, with Chandler Rhoads scoring 14, Alvin Abreu scoring a dozen, Tyrone Conley adding 11 and Colbey Santos getting 10 off the bench.

The Wildcats were 14-16 a year ago and finished fourth in the America East Conference. Head coach Bill Herrion is in his fifth season at UNH.
