COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
The Maryland women's tennis team was defeated Wednesday afternoon by No. 24 William and Mary, 4-3, at the Tennis Center at College Park. Despite a late rally by the Terps, the Tribe was able to hang on for the victory.
William and Mary (3-2) took the early lead as the Tribe twosomes dispatched of the Terrapins (1-5) in doubles play, sweeping the three matches.
Trailing in the match score 2-0, junior Eleanor Peters put Maryland on the board, downing Carmen Pop, 6-4, 6-3. It was Peters' second dual match victory on the season.
With wins from the No. 1 and No. 4 positions, William and Mary pushed the match score to 4-1, sealing the victory. Michal Amir was defeated at No. 1 singles, 6-4, 6-1, by the No. 95 ranked Katarina Zoricic while Katie Kargl topped Lisa Miller, 6-3, 6-4, clinching the victory for the Tribe. Miller's loss ended her streak of three consecutive singles wins.
One of four freshmen on the team, Jordan Hansbrough continues to grow, winning her third dual match on the season. After taking the opening set, 6-2, the rookie Hansbrough dominated the second set against senior Barbara Zidek, winning 6-0.
At the No. 6 spot, sophomore Oksana Krutiyenko was poised to finish off opponent Maria Morrissey after winning the first set 6-4 and taking a 4-2 lead in the second set. Morrissey was able to battle back, winning three consecutive games to give her the lead in the set, 5-4. Needing a rally of her own, Krutiyenko won the next three games, earning her victory, 7-5, and the match win.
Facing a tough team in William and Mary, the Terrapins came up just shy of pulling off the upset victory.
"We had a good effort today", said head coach Martin Novak. "I am very proud of today's effort. Today we competed and it was a step forward."
Maryland hits the road to head north for matches on Saturday and Sunday at Princeton and University of Pennsylvania, respectively. Both matches open play at 11 a.m.
