The Maryland women's tennis team was defeated in their ACC opener Friday afternoon at the Tennis Center at College Park as they fell to the University of Virginia, 6-1. Karin Lundmark was victorious in singles play, her first win at the No. 2 slot this season.
The Terrapins (2-7, 0-1) were bested in five-of-six singles matches by the No. 29 Cavaliers (7-2, 1-0). Lundmark produced the Terps lone point as she defeated Lindsey Hardenbergh, 7-6(4), 6-0.
Eleanor Peters had her winning streak of three consecutive match snapped as she was edged out by Emily Fraser, 6-1, 6-7(3), 12-10.
The Cavaliers clinched the match victory with the win at No. 6 singles, as Neela Vaez downed Maryland's Oksana Krutiyenko, 6-1, 6-2.
Virginia claimed the doubles point after battles in each of the three contests. At No. 2 doubles, Peters and Jordan Hansbrough were bested by Vaez and Amanda Rales in a tight match, 8-5. The Terps pulled even in the doubles score as Lundmark and Krutiyenko defeated Hardenbergh and Claire Barlett, 8-6.
Playing at No. 1 doubles, Maggie MacKeever and Lisa Miller were poised to clinch the doubles point for the Terps as they held a 7-6 lead over Fraser and Stevens. Unfortunately for Maryland, the Cavalier twosome ranked No. 74 nationally, rallied to win three consecutives games, winning the match 9-7.
The Terps continue in conference play, battling another tough ACC opponent in No. 39 Virginia Tech at noon Sunday in Blacksburg, Va.
