Vasquez Named Second Team All-ACC

March 9, 2009

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland junior Greivis Vasquez was named a second team All-Atlantic Coast Conference selection Monday in balloting by the Atlantic Coast Sports Media Association.

Vasquez, a guard from Caracas, Venezuela, is averaging 17.2 points, 5.4 rebounds and 4.8 assists per game for the Terrapins, and could become the first Maryland player to lead the team in all three categories in a season.

"Greivis has been an all-around player for us in terms of scoring, rebounding, ball-handling and defense," said head coach Gary Williams. "He is a quality player in a great league."

One of two Terrapins to have started all 30 games this season, Vasquez becomes the first Maryland player to earn back-to-back selections of second team or higher since Lonny Baxter was a second-team pick in 2000-01 and 2001-02.

Vasquez saved much of his offensive heroics for the late stages of the season. He has three games of at least 20 points in his last five, and closed the regular season by scoring in double figures in 11 straight games.

Vasquez had the first Maryland triple-double since 1987 in an overtime win over then-3rd-ranked North Carolina, scoring 35 points, grabbing 11 rebounds and dishing 10 assists. Two games later, he scored 33 points in a win at NC State.

Individual awards will be named over the next few days as the 12 teams head to the Georgia Dome for the ACC Tournament, which begins on Thursday. Maryland (18-12, 7-9) faces NC State on Thursday at 7 p.m., with the winner to face Wake Forest at 7 p.m. Friday.
