COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland women's tennis team lost to No. 18 Florida State, 7-0, Sunday afternoon in the regular season finale at the Tennis Center at College Park. Eleanor Peters and Jordan Hansbrough paired up to grab a win for the Terps at No. 3 doubles.
Florida State (14-6, 7-4 ACC) clinched the match victory with a three-set battle at the No. 1 singles slot. After falling to Peters in the first set 6-2, the No. 65-ranked singles player, Katie Rybakova, charged back taking the next two sets 6-2, 6-2.
The most consistent Terrapin (4-17, 1-10 ACC) twosome of Hansbrough and Peters won for second consecutive match and the sixth time this spring, defeating Noemie Scharle and Lauren Macfarlane, 8-5.
The loss to the Seminoles was closer than the showing on the scoreboard. The Terps rebounded from losing the doubles point to open singles play by holding a late first set tie or lead in four of the six matches.
Team captain Lisa Miller fought hard at the No. 4 flight, taking the opening set to tiebreaker. Miller eventually fell to No. 98 Federica Suess, 7-6(4), 6-3.
Despite the outcome, Head Coach Martin Novak was happy with how the team competed.
"I am proud of the team's efforts," said Novak. "We are learning to dig deeper. You can always talk about technique and talent but a lot of this game is heart."
Competing in her 105th career singles match and for the final time in College Park, senior co-captain Michal Amir was bested by No. 30 Scharle, 6-0, 6-2.
In a pre-match ceremony, Amir was presented with a plaque to commemorate her career as a Terp. After the match, she reflected on her time at the University of Maryland.
"My time at Maryland was the best experience of my life and the best decision of my life," said Amir. "I love the school, all the people I've met here and I love my team. It has definitely been an unforgettable time."
With the regular season concluded, Maryland heads to Cary, N.C. for the ACC Tournament. The Terrapins will face the tournament's top seeded team, Miami, on Thursday in the opening round.
