KING OF PRUSSIA, Pa. - Maryland junior Caitlyn McFadden has been named IWLCA National Midfielder of the Year for the 2009 season as announced at the All-American banquet on Saturday night at the Crowne Plaza Valley Forge in King of Prussia, Pa.
McFadden, who was a Tewaaraton Trophy finalist this season, was the heart and soul of this year's Maryland youth-laden squad. The junior led the Terps with 86 points on 54 goals and 32 assists. The 2009 ACC Player of the Year tallied at least one goal in every game during Maryland's 21-game winning streak and recorded at least a point in every match in 2009.
McFadden was honored alongside Karri Ellen Johnson as first team All-Americans. Brandi Jones and Sarah Mollison were each tabbed to the second team while junior defender Karissa Taylor garnered third-team honors.
In Division I, North Carolina's Logan Ripley was named C. Markland Kelly Goalkeeper of the Year while fellow Tar Heel Amber Falcone was tabbed Defender of the Year. Two-time Tewaaraton winner Hannah Nielsen from Northwestern racked up Attacker of the Year honors.
McFadden will compete with the U.S. national team at the 2009 FIL World Cup in Prague, Czech Republic June 17-27. The junior captain is one of three Maryland players that will vie for the cup, as Mollison looks for a repeat as a member of the Australian squad and sophomore midfielder Laura Merrifield will compete for England.
