CARY, N.C. -
Maryland finished second as a team as senior Greg Kelsey earned second place overall with a time of 14:40 on the 5-kilometer course Friday at the Wolfpack Invitational cross country meet held at the WakeMed Soccer Park.
On the women's side, Kristin Reed finished third individually to lead five Maryland runners in the top 11 and 10 runners in the top 17 as the Terrapins earned first place in the team standings
Kelsey finished just five seconds behind Ryan Hill, an NC State runner who was competing unattached. It matched his second-place finish from his last outing at the UMES Lid-Lifter and was his fifth top-10 finish in the last two seasons.
The Wolfpack placed six runners in the top nine to score 24 points in the men's team standings, while the Terps had five in the top 15 and seven among the top 16 to finish with 45 points. The Maryland finish was strong, given that NC State placed second as a team at last year's ACC Championships.
Junior Alex Lundy was eighth overall for the Terps at 14:54, with Kyle Gaffney in 11th at 15:19.
The Terps had six runners finish as a group between 17th and 22nd - Greg Jubb made his Terrapin debut in 17th at 15:37, followed by Ben Diestel (15:42), Chris Conway (15:46), Dan Fishbein (15:56), Craig Morgan (16:01) and Drew Abernathy (16:06). Conway and Morgan were also making their Terrapin debuts on Friday.
Maryland finished with 24 points in the women's race. Host NC State was second with 38 points, with North Carolina A&T in third with 80 over the 5K course.
Reed finished in 17:46, but there were only 41 seconds between the Terrapins' first and fifth runners and 55 seconds separating the first and seventh placers. Christina Nelson (18:19), Julie Fricke (18:21) and Ashley Campbell (18:23) finished in seventh, eighth and ninth, respectively. Halsey Sinclair was Maryland's final scorer, placing 11th in 18:27.
Angeli Sivaraman was 12th in 18:30 and Andrea Rothschild was 14th in 18:41 to account for Maryland's scorers and place-holders. Rothschild led a group of four Terps who finished as a group from 14th to 17th - Ashley Cromartie (18:45), Danielle Karagannis (18:46) and Lindsay Ritchings (18:50).
NC State's Brittany Tinsley was the individual winner, finishing in 17:30.
Maryland competes next on the same course on Oct. 2 in the Great American Cross Country Festival.
