PRINCESS ANNE, Md. -
Alex Lundy and Greg Kelsey finished 1-2, with newcomer Kyle Gaffney placing fourth to lift the University of Maryland men's cross country team to a team victory Saturday in the UMES Lid-Lifter Invitational.
On the women's side, Maryland senior Kristin Reed earned the individual victory and the Terrapins put all five scorers among the top eight finishers to score 21 points and take the team title.
Lundy, a Terrapin junior who last year became Maryland's first NCAA Nationals qualifier in recent memory, covered the 8-kilometer course in 26:02.5. He repeated his accomplishment from a year ago in posting an individual victory in a season-opening race, as he won the Mount St. Mary's Duals last year.
Kelsey was just behind for Maryland in 26:04.8, while Gaffney was strong in his Terrapin debut in running 26:11.6. Gaffney is a junior transfer from American University.
Also scoring for the Terrapin men were Mike Cator, who was 15th in 26:42.9 and junior newcomer Dan Fishbein, who was 16th in 26:45.9. Sumanth Kuppalli (20th, 27:13.7) and Kevin Gahr (22nd, 27:28.6) were in the sixth and seventh spots for Maryland.
Maryland finished with 38 points, outscoring Navy (44) and Norfolk State (47) in a close race. Seven teams sent runners to the UMES Lid-Lifter, which will be run on the same course as the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional in November.
The Terrapin women ran away with the team scoring, with their 21 points easily besting West Virginia (50) and St. Joseph's, Pa. (59).
Reed, continuing the momentum she gained with an outstanding outdoor track season in the spring, ran to a 12-second victory over Karly Hamric of West Virginia. She covered the 5-kilometer course in 18:20.6.
Maryland took the 3-4-5 spots, with freshman Julie Fricke (18:43.7), senior Erin Matyus (19:03.4) and junior Ashley Campbell (19:05.5) helping the Terrapins dominate the early finishers. Sophomore Ashley Cromartie (19:07.4) was Maryland's fifth scorer, placing eighth.
Lindsay Ritchings (11th, 19:09.5) and Angeli Sivaraman (14th, 19:12.5) finished in the sixth and seventh spots for the Terrapins.
Maryland will compete next on Sept. 18 at the Wolfpack Invitational, to be run on a course in Cary, N.C., which will host three meets this year, including the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships in late October.
