Terps in the MLS

PHILADELPHIA - Maryland men's soccer standouts Drew Yates and Kevin Tangney became the latest in a long line of Terrapins to be drafted in the Major League Soccer SuperDraft Thursday.

Yates was selected with the 29th pick by the Chicago Fire. The Severna Park, Md., product played in all 92 matches during his four-year stint in College Park. He ended his career with 14 goals while helping lead Maryland to a national title in 2008, an Elite Eight appearance in 2009, and a pair of Sweet Sixteen berths in 2006 and 2007. The Fire went 11-7-12 in 2008 and advanced to the playoffs. He joins Corben Bone (Wake Forest) and Kwame Watson-Siriboe (Connecticut) as Chicago draftees in the first and second rounds.

Tangney, who was drafted 35th by Chivas USA, takes his game to professional ranks after an inspirational career at Maryland. The Newtown, Pa., native spent five years in College Park after suffering two major knee injuries but managed to guide the Terps to two national championships and threw in an ACC title in 2008 for good measure. He was tabbed NSCAA First Team All-Atlantic South Region as well as Second Team All-ACC as a senior in 2009 after scoring three goals and adding an assist while leading the Terrapin defense to nine shutouts. Tangney was Chivas' second overall pick after the club selected Blair Gavin (Akron) in the first round.
