PITTSBURGH, Pa. -
Ginny Glover won three individual events and helped the 400 free relay to a critical win to help lift the Maryland women's swimming and diving team past Pitt and Villanova this weekend.
Maryland topped Villanova, 247-106, and Pitt, 181-172, and fell just short against Penn State, 185-168.
Glover, who has racked up two ACC Swimmer of the Week honors this season, won the 100 back (55.87), 100 free (51.48) and 200 free (1:50.09) while finishing second in the 200 back (2:00.20). The sophomore swam the final leg of the 400 free relay to close out Saturday and pick up the win against Pitt. She combined on that relay with Laura Wright, Annie Fittin and Megan Lafferty.
Jen Vogel picked up a pair of individual wins in the 100 fly (56.35) and 200 fly (2:02.38). Diver Alisa Kurbatova swept her events, scoring a 285.65 in the 1-meter and a 289.40 in the 3-meter.
Annie Fittin also had a solid two days in the pool for Maryland (9-2, 3-1 ACC) winning the 50 free (23.44) and taking second in the 100 back (56.43).
The youth continued to shine for the Terps as well, as freshman Addie Koelle took second in the 100 fly (56.81) and fellow classmate Megan Lafferty touched the wall third in the 100 free (51.98). Sophomore Alexa Hamilton picked up points with a third-place finish in the 100 breast (1:05.38) and 200 breast (2:21.94).
In addition to the 400 free relay, the Terps took second in the 200 free relay (1:34.12), courtesy of Fittin, Lafferty, Glover and Wright. Maryland also captured the 400 medley relay (3:48.74) as the squad of Fittin, Hamilton, Vogel and Lafferty took first.
"We really responded well," head coach Sean Schimmel said. "We seem to always come through at the end, as was evident with the relay win that we needed to beat Pitt. Considering our work load, we are doing a great job and getting good times. Five weeks out from the conference championship, I feel very good about where we are."
Maryland takes on West Virginia in dual meet action next Saturday at Eppley Recreation Natatorium.
