Maryland fans have always thought of Gary Williams as legendary.
Thursday night, it became official.
On a night of tributes from former players, coaching colleagues and the Terrapin faithful, University of Maryland men's basketball head coach Gary Williams was enshrined in the Sports Legends Museum Hall of Legends.
The ceremony drew more than 1,000 people to the historic Hippodrome Theatre in Baltimore.
Williams joins Babe Ruth, Johnny Unitas, Art Modell, Jim McKay and Brooks Robinson in the Hall of Legends, which is housed in the museum at Camden Yards.
Williams, the all-time winningest coach at Maryland, got tributes from a number of former players, including Steve Francis, Walt Williams and Juan Dixon.
Coaching colleagues such as Bobby Cremins of College of Charleston, Jay Wright of Villanova, Tubby Smith of Minnesota and Jimmy Patsos of Loyola also spoke of Williams' longevity, commitment to his players and the sport, and his unwavering passion.
