NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -
Freshman Jordaan Sanford saw her first collegiate action, got her first win, recorded her first doubles' title, and won her first singles' title this weekend at the Hampton Roads Collegiate Invitational. Sanford won the women's A1 singles' title and teamed up with sophomore Burce Kurkan to win the women's B1 doubles' championship.
Sanford came from behind to win the singles' title against Georgetown's Stephanie Wetmore. After dropping the first set 6-4, Sanford responded winning the second set 6-4, and taking the tiebreaking third set 1-0 (6). Sanford got her first collegiate win against Army's Della Taylor before rolling off three more victories en route to the singles' title.
Kurkan continued her impressive fall season, teaming up with Sanford to take home the doubles' title. The duo dropped Army's Carly Riney and Robie Verano 8-4 in the opening round; then knocked off Drexel's Zeynep Mafa and Sonia Stosic 8-4. In the finals, they beat Delaware's Ivana Petrich and Montserrat Ripoll 8-2, giving Sanford her first collegiate championship and Kurkan her fifth-straight doubles victory.
“Jordaan's win is not surprising to me since she is a very fine player,” said Maryland head coach Howard Joffe. “But in the context of her starting her college career, and the energy and efforts she has invested into her academics, the victory does speak volumes about her depth of character.”
The Terps brought home another singles' championship as Kurkan also continued her unbeaten streak in singles, winning four matches and taking home the women's D1 singles' championship. Kurkan easily slipped past Georgetown's Samantha Martin 6-0, 6-2 in the finals. She is now 7-0 in singles and 5-0 in doubles this season, and has yet to drop a set.
Terp veterans Julia Huschke and Jordan Hansbrough also competed this weekend, teaming up to reach the finals of the women's A2 doubles' bracket. Huschke and Hansbrough breezed through their first two matches, dropping Pitt's Elizabeth Adams and Gabi Catanzaretti 8-2, then NJIT's Ksenia Kuzmenko and Nina Mayevska 8-1 to reach the finals.
