Maryland (1-0, 0-0 ACC), led by four newcomers, bested Navy 7-0 (1-2, 0-0 Ratriot League) Thursday in its first match of the spring season. The Terps failed to drop a set in their rout of the Midshipmen.
Led at No. 1 singles by true freshman Jordaan Sanford the Terps were dominant. Sanford teamed up with fellow newcomer Cristina Sanchez-Quintanar at No. 1 doubles ousting Navy's Amanda Griffin and Erin Snook 8-0. In singles, Sanford dominated Griffin 6-1, 6-1.
The Terps won in dominating fashion across the board. Veterans Julia Huschke and Jordan Hansbrough joined together at No. 2 doubles for an 8-2 win over Emani Decquir and Stefanie Ton. Ana Belzunce and Welma Luus also won 8-2 over Brittney Boucher and Darien Sears.
Maryland put up equally impressive numbers in singles. Belzunce beat Decquir 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 singles, while Sanchez-Quintanar thwarted Ton 6-0, 6-3 at No. 3 singles.
"We're very excited having had our first match," said head coach Howard Joffe. "Our girls acquitted themselves very well."
Up next the Terps battle Syracuse at noon Saturday, January 29 at the Tennis Center at College Park.
