COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Michael Boyden pitched three scoreless innings to open the game and Gary Schneider led a balanced offensive attack to help the Red Team defeat the Black Team 7-4 in game one of the 2010 Red vs. Black Super Regional.
Boyden, a junior from La Plata, Md., gave up just two hits while striking out five in three innings for the Red Team, allowing the offense to open a 3-0 lead it wouldn't surrender.
Schneider, Tomo Delp and and Kyle Convissar all had two-hit games for the Red Team.
After Eric Potter, the starting pitcher for the Black Team, retired the side in the first, the Red Team scored at least one run in each of the next five innings.
Schneider had an RBI-double in the second, and Delp followed with a solo home-run to deep left-center field to make it 3-0 after three innings.
With runners on first and third, the Red Team executed a double-steal in the fourth inning to increase the lead to 4-0.
The Black Team rallied in the top of the fifth, scoring three runs to make it 4-3. After Brandon Padula's walk with the bases loaded gave the Black Team their first run, freshman Tim Kiene doubled to score two more. But left-handed pitcher Jimmy Reed induced a double-play to end the threat and retain the lead for the Red Team.
Kiene finished the evening 3-for-5 with two RBI to lead the Black Team.
Boyden was credited with the win, while Potter, who went 2.2 innings and surrendered three runs, took the loss.
The series continues on Saturday at 7 p.m. and concludes Sunday at noon.
