Fresh off three wins to open the season, Maryland travels to historic Madison Square Garden to face 4th-ranked Pittsburgh in a semifinal of the 2K Sports Classic benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer. Illinois and Texas battle in the late semifinal with the final games coming on Friday evening.
The Terrapins are making their first trip to Madison Square Garden since they won the same tournament in 2006. Maryland beat St. John's, 92-60, and Michigan State, 62-60, on 11/16 & 11/17/2006, in the championship rounds.
Sophomore center Jordan Williams was voted the Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week on Monday. He has opened the season with three straight double-doubles, running a streak of double-doubles to five games (including both NCAA Tournament games last season). He is the first Maryland player since Joe Smith to have a streak of at least five. Smith had seven straight late in the 1995 season.
Williams has lived up to the preseason attention he has received. A member of last year's ACC All-Rookie Team, he is one of eight sophomores on the preseason top-50 watch list for the Wooden Award.
Senior forward Cliff Tucker is also off to a hot start for the Terrapins. Tucker has three straight double-figure scoring games, the first time he's done that in his career. Tucker is averaging 15.7 ppg thus far.
Maryland head coach Gary Williams enters his 22nd season at his alma mater and his 33rd season overall. His 651 victories place him fifth on the list of NCAA Division I victories among active coaches. He is the 33rd coach all-time to get 650 Division I wins.
