
Terps Roll in Day Two of Terp Cup

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland swimming and diving team continued its dominance Friday night, extending both team leads in day two of Terp Cup action at Eppley Recreation Natatorium.
The Terrapin women boasted 17 of the 40 swimmers that competed in the top finals Friday night and also had a pair of divers in the finals action. Maryland picked up individual top finishes from Victoria Cassidy (400 IM - 4:18.69), Annie Fittin (100 fly - 54:34, 100 back - 53.50), and Ginny Glover (200 free - 1:48.31).
Maryland also swept both relays with Fittin, Alexa Hamilton, Megan Lafferty, and Glover winning the 200 medley (1:41.97) and the foursome of Cassidy, Lafferty, Fittin and Glover captured the 800 free (7:25.39).
The Terps dominated 100 fly action as Lafferty (54.37), Jenni Roberts (54.97), and Addison Koelle (55.41) followed Fittin with second, third and fourth place finishes, respectively. Hamilton took second in the 100 breast (1:03.41) and Glover touched the wall second in the 100 back (54.65).
Jessica Whelan was Maryland's top diver in the 3-meter, finishing second with 253.95 points. The Terps also picked up a third place showing in the 200 medley relay as Elena Donald, Chelsey Eberwein, Koelle and Blair Cross racked up 1:43.94 in the first event of the evening.
The men's squad also had a tremendous night, maintaining a strong 79-point lead over UConn in the team standings after two days of competition. Jeff Winters (100 fly - 49.55) and Mitch Challacombe (100 back - 49.76) secured two first place performances for the Terps.
Jake Stephens touched the wall third in the 400 IM (4:02.83) and Roger Dent finished third in the 100 fly (49.74). Like the women, the Terps had a strong showing in the 100 fly as Sean Stewart, Brooks Gabel and Myles Poster also picked up points in the event.
Andrew Relihan continued his stellar junior campaign, finishing second in the 200 free (1:39.45) and 100 back (50.02). Eric Sachs led the Terps on the board, taking second in the 3-meter (243.85). The men capped the night with a second place finish in the 800 free relay as the team of Challacombe, John Hauser, Brad Dillon and Relihan racked up a time of 6:42.82, an improvement of almost 11 seconds from its qualifying time.
Maryland looks to finish strong Saturday with prelims beginning at 10 a.m. Spectators will need to park in Terrapin Trail Garage or any other football non-permitted lot due to a Maryland home football game at 8 p.m.
