COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland women's basketball team topped American 78-52 Sunday afternoon at the Comcast Center. Freshman Alyssa Thomas led all scorers with 16 points.

Junior Lynetta Kizer scored 12 points and junior Anjale Barrett scored 11. Sophomore Diandra Tchatchouang added nine points for the Terps (3-1) who opened the game on a 23-3 run against American (2-2).

"We felt like [our quick start] was very important in both the first half and second half," said head coach Brenda Frese. "We wanted to have a lot of energy and give credit to the five out there. I thought they came out very inspired. What really sparked it was our transition game. I thought we did a really great job of being up-tempo."

Frese and the Terps followed suit in the second half with a 19-4 run over the Eagles to extend their lead to 29 points.

Maryland led the Eagles in rebounding by a double-digit margin, 40-29. In all four games this season, the Terps have controlled the boards. Thomas and Kizer each brought in seven rebounds while freshman Alicia DeVaughn pulled in six.

"Being able to change up our defense was very important," said Frese. "It was very important and [it's] something that we are starting to build on and improve."

Lisa Strack and Alexis Dobbs each scored 13 points for American, which was held to 17 of 58 shooting by Maryland's tight defense. Stephanie Anya brought in a team-high six rebounds and Liz Leer recorded two steals.

Sunday afternoon's victory was Frese's 200th at Maryland. In just her ninth season in College Park, Frese has an overall record of 200-74 and is the fastest in Maryland history to 200 wins.

The Terrapins will head out on a three-game road trip beginning Friday at East Carolina, followed by Massachusetts on Saturday. Maryland will take on host Purdue in the annual ACC/Big Ten Challenge before returning home to face Appalachian State on Dec. 5.
