CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -
Maryland capped off its fall season this weekend at the Kitty Harrison Invitational hosted by the University of North Carolina. The event, which was held at both North Carolina and Duke, pitted the Terps against some of the nation's top teams, including three conference foes--UNC, Duke, and Georgia Tech.
Newcomer Ana Belzunce had already made a name for herself this season, reaching the final of the Cissie Leary Invite (Sept. 28) before falling to Penn's highly touted freshman Connie Hsu. In the Terps' fall season finale, she again led the Terps, grabbing two singles and two doubles wins.
Belzunce downed the University of North Carolina-Greensboro's Nitooli Wilkins 6-0, 6-1 Saturday afternoon. Wilkins had previously topped Princeton's No. 49 Hilary Bartlett earlier in the tournament. Belzunce also recorded a 6-4, 6-3 win over Minnesota's Alessandra Ferrazzi when the Terps opened singles play Friday.
In doubles, Belzunce and freshman Jordaan Sanford opened up the tournament with an 8-5 win over Stephanie Macfarlane and Alex Whitehead of UNC-Greensboro. The duo also scored a doubles win Sunday, 8-6, over Hope Johnson and Katie Kargl of William and Mary. Saturday afternoon the pair nearly pulled off the upset of Princeton's No. 8 Bartlett and Taylor Marable, falling just short 8-6.
The Terps sent five competitors in total to the Kitty Harrison Inviational. Senior Julia Huschke and sophomores Eleonore Paillaud and Burce Kurkan also made the trip.
Maryland will be off again until January when dual meets begin.
