Quotes from Gary Williams

Dec. 11, 2010

Head Coach Gary Williams

On Boston College:
"[This is a] very veteran team. I think sometimes with a new coach you think it's a new team, but it's a very veteran team. They're playing a different system with a new coach but they're used to playing with each other, and that helps. They're playing well. They had a good win against Providence. They're really up-tempo the way they play compared to previous years."

On how significant the game is:
"Well it'd be great [to get a win]. It's the first ACC game and it'd be great to be 1-0 for a month. But there's 15 more to play. If you win it you [could] lose 15, if you lose it you [could] win 15. I think people will judge something on this game probably more than it really means. By the time you play again in the league I'm sure [both teams] will be different in terms of where you've taken your team to. But for now, for Dec. 12, it's significant."

On where the team is now compared to where he'd like the team to be in February:
"I think where we are now is we've proved we can play with top-20 teams. We haven't proven we can beat them and that's a goal of ours, to get to that level. It's a step-by-step thing; it doesn't just happen in one day. You have to keep working hard. We've worked hard in practice I think and we'll have a chance after tomorrow's game to really do a lot of things. I'm looking forward to that time, but now the focus is on whatever it takes to win this game tomorrow."

On Cliff Tucker's progression:
"He's more mature as a senior. He did come into my office to talk about things, which I don't think he would've done a year before. It's good to see because it's not just - believe it or not as a coach you want to feel that your guys when they leave here, whether it's basketball or whatever, that they've grown up and made some adjustments in their life that will help them the next 40 years. You hope that for all your seniors every year."

On BC's Reggie Jackson:
"He's a little different because I don't think anybody looked at him last year as a ball-handling guard, and now he has the ball quite a bit for them. It's a good combination, he and [Biko] Paris. Paris did have the ball a lot and it takes some of the pressure off Paris, and I think Paris is probably a little more comfortable because of that shooting the ball this year. So it's a pretty good tandem. Jackson is one of those guys that can finish when he drives. He gets up well and draws some contact so we have to do a good job on him."
