Maryland Head Coach Gary Williams
Opening statement:
"Anytime a game gets like that in the last few minutes, things happen. We missed some shots, they made their shots. It's the first 38 minutes a lot of times that determines getting into that situation. Give Boston College credit, they did a good job of isolating some matchups. It hurt us a little bit. We didn't do a good enough job with our offense, or our defense, in certain periods of the game. It hurt us. It was a good game, in terms of both teams playing hard. But you have to execute for 40 minutes and then you take your chances if you do that. We didn't do a great job of our execution early on in that game. Even though we had a two-point lead at halftime, I felt we should have had a bigger lead, but it wasn't there. Then in the second half, nobody could pull away and it was a very good college game in the second half in terms of people going after each other and hopefully we learn some things from that game."
On what they will work on next:
"We just making sure that we do a little better job of being sharp with our offense. When we execute our plays we seem to be able to score, which is more of an importance this year, executing our plays. Last year, we had a situation where we had a player that could score even when the offense broke down. We have to do it a little bit differently this year, but that's ok. There's a lot of ways to get it done. We're a pretty good team when we execute as well as we can."
On the transition game:
"We weren't great in transition. They really do a good job. That's a 180-degree change in the way they play. They caught us a couple of times in critical situations. That's them doing a good job, and that's on us for not getting back."
On where the team is at this point:
"No one's put us away yet. We've lost obviously. I think we're a good team. We've played good teams. BC coming in here had beaten Texas A&M, California, Providence, just to name a few. They're a good team. They have a couple of really good players. They have four seniors plus [Reggie] Jackson back from last year. They play differently, different coach, but they're a very experienced team. A lot more experienced than us."
On Jordan Williams:
"He's just stepped it up this year. He doesn't have the experience around him that he did last year, which I think really helped him as a freshman. So he's taken it upon himself to really do a great job. I think he'd given us tremendous leadership. In other words, it's obvious to me as the coach, I think anyone who watches Jordan play sees his desire, see his will to win. And that has to be infectious. In other words, he's got to get through to everybody in our program. And I think it will. Jordan just has to stay tough. You don't want to say it's just another performance but he's been doing that now for us this year. It was just a tremendous effort for him to do that being double-teamed most of the time and have no turnovers is a tremendous stat, in addition to his rebounds, and points. He's on his way and he's just got to stay really tough and focused as we come along."
Senior Forward Dino Gregory
On opening ACC play with a loss:
"It's very disappointing. We had eight days to work on things and get better as a team and we didn't execute."
On Boston College's mismatches:
"They had a couple of mismatches, especially when they put Joe Trapani at the 5 and Corey Raji at the 4, but this is the ACC and everyone can play. We have to make adjustments on our defense. There is really no excuse for the mismatches."
Sophomore Forward Jordan Williams
On the final minutes of the game:
"We missed a couple of free throws, took a couple of bad shots and were not patient on offense. We went away from what we wanted to do on offense when they took the 3-point lead and we didn't execute well."
On his endurance:
"I felt fatigued, but I think my adrenaline passed my fatigue tonight. I felt pretty good the entire game."
On opening ACC play with a loss:
"Any loss is disappointing, but to start ACC play with a loss is tough. We are going to work very hard the next few days in practice and move on. We aren't going to focus on this loss any more than we have to. Good teams can rebound after tough losses, and that's exactly what we want to do."
On defending the 3-point shot:
"I think it was a combination of mismatches and not executing our offense. Boston College did a really good job getting open and hitting their shots. When I was guarding Corey Raji, I had to help Dino (Gregory) guard Joe Trapani when he cut into the middle. They would then kick the ball outside, and I would be stuck down low on defense. They did a really good job executing their offense tonight."
Boston College Head Coach Steve Donahue
Opening statement:
"That was a great college basketball game and we were fortunate enough to play in it. I think both teams played really well. I am most proud of our guy's perseverance, where Maryland had chances to put us away. We came through with big shot after big shot. The last 30 seconds we stopped them and this helped us win today"
On second half adjustments:
"Well a couple things, we were in foul trouble in the first half. Not having Corey and Josh out there for long stretches hurt us. Once we were able to establish and get our core guys in there, we were able to rebound the ball better. They are a very difficult team to keep off the boards. I thought we did a decent job staying in front of them, and I thought Maryland made a lot of hard shots. I thought Maryland played very well offensively as well."
On Corey Raji:
"He has been so great since I have arrived on campus. I can't say enough good things about him. He has been such a good influence on and off the court which has made my transition very easy. He has lost a ton of weight to get himself in great shape, and he has worked religiously during the off-season on his shot."
On BC's shooting:
"I think the reason we are shooting 3-pointers better is because our guys work really hard and put in extra time outside of practice. I can't remember the last time I told one of my guys they had taken a bad shot because I don't want to put that thought in their heads. We want to teach them as much as we can about playing the game, but I don't want them to ever think they shouldn't shoot the basketball."
On winning on the road:
"I can see why it is so tough in the ACC playing on the road. This arena is probably very similar to the others, it's very loud, but it's a great place to play. I am taking it all in because it is just a great college basketball experience. I do like the fact we played our first ACC game on the road. There wasn't as much pressure to win and people don't expect us to just go out and make great plays. People don't expect you to win so I think that helped the boy's confidence."
Boston College Senior Guard Biko Paris
On his team's ability to shoot 3-pointers:
"I mean, [Maryland] ran a really nice press, but they were slow getting back on defense so we had a lot of wide open shots."
On the difference this year in Boston College's game beyond the arc:
"Well, in practice we take a lot more 3-pointers than we usually would have taken in the past. Coach stresses a lot about getting extra shots in after practice and working with each other on our shots. We've just been establishing ourselves as who we are as a team, we shoot threes and play hard on defense. Shooting threes is just a part of who were are now."
On the team's second-half rebounding adjustments:
"We didn't really change that much. Coach was stressing to Reggie [Jackson] and I, and Dallas [Elmore] and the rest of the guards to help get down there and take out some layers, trap them, and clean it up. So that's what we really focused on doing, just helping our big guys out with the offensive rebounding situation."
On whether he anticipated taking a lot of 3-pointers, or if the opportunities where there:
"The opportunities just presented themselves, I never prearrange how many shots I'm going to take before a game I just take whatever they give me."
