COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The 22nd-ranked Maryland women's basketball team rolled past Appalachian State 81-65 Sunday afternoon. Junior Lynetta Kizer led the Terrapins (7-1) with her second double-double of the year, while sophomore Diandra Tchatchouang scored a game-high 17 points.
Maryland outscored Appalachian State (6-2) 54-18 in the paint. The Terps outrebounded the Mountaineers 50-37. Maryland's 20 offensive rebounds led to 22 second chance points, as the Mountaineers scored just nine.
Kizer was 6-for-13 from the field for 12 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Tchatchouang was 6-for-9 from the field and 5-for-7 at the foul line. She pulled down seven boards as well. Freshman Alyssa Thomas scored 13 points, all coming in the first half.
Freshman Alicia DeVaughn and sophomore Tianna Hawkins each notched nine points, while junior Anjale Barrett and freshman Natasha Cloud each added eight. DeVaughn grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds.
The Terrapins held a close lead throughout the first half. They held a 39-38 lead at the break. Coming out of halftime, Maryland went on a 12-2 run in the first five minutes to stretch its lead to 11. 12 of Tchatchouang's points and all eight of Cloud's came in the second half.
Maryland grabbed 11 steals to Appalachian State's eight. The Terrapins had 17 turnovers in the game and forced the Mountaineer's into 20. The Terps shot 46.3 percent for the game to Appalachian State's 34.8 percent.
The Terrapins will hit the road Tuesday night to play Loyola (Md.) in Baltimore at Reitz Arena. The Terps and the Greyhounds will tip off at 7 p.m. and general admission tickets are $5. The game will be broadcast on the Terrapin Sports Radio Network and can be heard on ESPN 1300 (Baltimore) and ESPN 980 (Washington).
