Maryland Head Coach Brenda Frese

Opening Statement:

“I thought it was a much better second half for us. We definitely credit Appalachian State because they came ready to play. We talked to the team before this game and we let them know this was a dangerous game. I was really impressed with some of the things they did on film and with their stats and success they had. Our energy level definitely picked up in the second half, and I credit the zone defense because it really gave them problems. We did a much better job with being unselfish, and our post players dominated the game. It was a nice, solid second half for us.”

On the halftime adjustments:

“We had two decisions to make. We found out that Alyssa [Thomas] was not going to be able to play in the second half, and we were having trouble defending their sets. They were getting a lot of looks from the perimeter and I wanted to go to our strength with our size to take advantage of our length. I thought our bigs did a tremendous job.”

On the tempo of the game:

“The only point we felt comfortable and relaxed is when the final horn sounded. I think anytime you have a team like Appalachian State that is so skilled and can shoot the three, you can never count them out. They are a really good team, but it was nice to see our team step up in the second half.”

On the team's hustle:

“In the first half we were not communicating like we were at Purdue. We looked flat and fatigued and I really felt we needed to step up our energy, especially on loose ball plays and things we could control.”

On the team's progression:

“I feel like we are definitely growing together, and that is what a season is about. Even with our adversity with Alyssa [Thomas] going out, we are starting to come together and get a better feel for each other. We only have so many games left before we start ACC play.”

Junior Forward Lynetta Kizer

On Maryland's size advantage:

“I think we wanted to focus on hitting the short corner and finishing. Our size definitely had a big impact on the game, and we were able to outscore them down low.”

On the team's progression:

“When adversity sets in, like the first half when things weren't going our way and we were not communicating, everyone has to do their part to get the job done. I think our younger players really met their challenge today.”
