Quotes from Gary Williams - 2/23/10

Feb. 23, 2010

Head coach Gary Williams

On Clemson:
"It's been about three weeks since we played Clemson down there. It was a tough game for us. We turned the ball over 26 times. [Jerai] Grant and [Trevor] Booker combined for 28 rebounds against us. We played pretty good defense but really had no offense that day and they got us. We've been working hard as a team since then just trying to get better all the time. This is one of those games when you find out if you have been improving. Obviously this time of year any game is a big game but I think this is a big game for both Clemson and Maryland."

On Greivis Vasquez:
"I think he's playing great basketball, no doubt about that. But I thought what he did last year kind of went under the radar. He led the team in points, rebounds and assists. He's the first player ever - you can pick your favorite player to play at the University of Maryland but nobody did what Greivis did as a junior. So I was impressed with that. Whatever he's done this year I knew he was capable of and he's played some terrific games. There is no doubt about that."

On the key to tomorrow's game:
"I think it's important that we play our game. We know what we have to do and we're good when we stay within our game, like most teams. We weren't able to do that against Clemson and that's the big thing, it's not one specific area. It's making sure we play our game and hopefully we'll be able to do that."

On being 9-3 in the Atlantic Coast Conference:
"Going into the season I've always felt there's a way we can be really good. Any team I've coached whether it was here or somewhere else I've felt that way and it was no different this year. I knew we had some seniors with experience; I thought we were a little small; I thought we had the chance to be a very good ball-handling team; and our defense has been the thing I was concerned with but we've been a good defensive team. Hopefully we can continue to do that down the stretch."
