COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Though the snow was piling up outside, the Maryland women's swimming and diving team kept its hot streak alive, defeating Georgetown, 169.5-81.5, on Friday at Eppley Recreation Natatorium.
Maryland (11-2) celebrated its senior class of 2010 in fashion with seven individual wins coming out of this year's group. Laura Wright, Nina Rossi and Jackie Davidson each won a pair of events to lead the way for the Terps.
Wright won both the 50 free (23.45) and the 100 breast (1:05.51) as Maryland swept the top three spots in both events. Wright was followed by Ginny Glover (23.81) and Lia Reich (24.55) in the 50 free while Alexa Hamilton (1:06.71) and Ashley Cox (1:07.17) finished second and third in the 100 breast.
Rossi captured the 50 breast (30.83) and her exhibition time in the 100 IM (59.98) reigned supreme on the day. Martha VanLieshout (31.08) and Alexa Hamilton (31.15) took second and third in the 50 breast to cap another Maryland sweep.
Davidson won the 100 free (52.42) and the 50 back (27.15). Fellow classmate Rossi took second in the 100 free (52.83) and Megan Lafferty and senior Patty DeScenza (27.77) completed a Terrapin top three in the 50 back.
The Terps also took all top three spots in the 200 free as Addie Koelle (1:54.58), Erin Stout (1:54.62) and Kim Larson (1:55.68) went 1, 2, 3. Kim Larson won the 500 free (5:06.44) trailed by Stout (5:10.93) who finished second.
Glover picked up a win in the 100 back (55.43) while Sophie Allen (1:00.37) and DeScenza (1:00.54) wrapped up the sweep.
Maryland stayed consistent in one of its' best strokes - the fly. The Terps tallied the three best times in exhibition swims with Annie Fittin (25.12), senior Jen Vogel (25.67) and Jessalyn Crawford (25.74). Vogel went on to win the 100 fly (56.93) with Fittin a close second (57.62).
Alisa Kurbatova had the top scores in both the 1-meter (328.20) and 3-meter (370.20).
"I really think it's about how we finished our dual meet season with wins on both the men's and women's side today," head coach Sean Schimmel said. "It was a great day for our seniors and the service they've given us the last four years. The leadership getting us to this point has so much to do with these ten seniors."
The Terps return to competition when they travel to Chapel Hill N.C. Feb. 17-20 for the 2010 ACC Women's Swimming and Diving Championships.
