BLACKSBURG, Va. - Brett Harman shut down Virginia Tech batters for eight innings and the Terps came up with key hits all afternoon as Maryland won its Atlantic Coast Conference opener, 10-0, on Friday. It was the first time Maryland shut out an ACC opponent since a 7-0 win over NC State on May 4, 2002.

Harman spread out seven hits and didn't allow Virginia Tech to record two hits in one inning. The junior right-hander struck out five and walked three to improve to 2-2 on the season. Freshman lefty Jimmy Reed pitched a scoreless ninth to preserve the shutout as Maryland won its ACC opener for the first time since 2007.

Brandon Padula went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI, and was one of six Terps to record at least two hits on the day.

The Terps manufactured the game's first run in a usual fashion. David Poutier singled to lead off the game, and then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Alfredo Rodriguez. Poutier stole third base - the first of seven for Maryland on the day - and scored on a sacrifice fly by Padula.

A four-run fifth helped Maryland build an insurmountable lead. Rodriguez drew a lead-off walk and advanced to third on a Matt Marquis single. Padula knocked in Rodriguez with a single to left field and later scored on another single, this time by designated hitter Dan Gentzler. Genztler and Matthew Murakami eventually reached home on a double by catcher Jack Cleary.

Maryland added two more runs in the seventh and eighth, and tacked on one more in the ninth to complete the scoring. The win was the fifth straight for the Terps (6-6).

Justin Wright (2-2) took the loss for Virginia Tech (9-4), giving up five earned runs in four innings.

With rain in the forecast, Saturday's game time has been pushed back to 4 p.m.
