COLLEGE PARK, Md. - NC State starting pitcher Cory Mazzoni threw a complete game and Maryland was unable to take advantage of a solid performance from Brett Harman, falling 7-2 Saturday afternoon in game two of the three-game set.
Mazzoni (5-2) held the Terps to five hits and two runs - one of them earned - while striking out five and walking just one.
Harman, meanwhile, gave up single runs in the first and fifth innings. Both runs were unearned and Maryland stayed within striking distance for much of the game.
The Terps cut the lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning when designated hitter Ian Schwalenberg drew a walk and later scored on an error by NC State left fielder Harold Riggins.
But NC State (24-13, 8-9 ACC) - and Riggins - responded in the top of the sixth. Riggins led off the inning with an opposite field home run and shortstop Matt Bergquist's RBI single increased the lead to 4-1.
David Poutier led off the eighth with a double, advanced to third on a flyout and scored on a wild pitch to bring the Terps within one, but a three-run ninth inning by the Wolfpack increased its lead to 7-2.
Harman(4-5) took the loss, giving up two earned runs and four total runs. The junior also struck out five and walked one.
Redshirt freshman Jack Cleary led Maryland (14-23, 4-13 ACC) offensively with a 2-for-4 performance at the plate, his eighth multi-hit game this season.
Maryland and NC State play the final game of the series tomorrow at 1 p.m. RHP Sander Beck (0-5, 7.85) will start for the Terps against the Wolfpack's LHP Alex Sogard (0-1, 4.43). Admission is free.
